This is why I do what I do. 💚

Watching my patients take control of their health and thrive is truly the most rewarding part of my work.

Seeing this amazing person balance their hormones, normalize their thyroid levels, and improve their blood glucose levels through diet and supplements is exactly why I became a naturopathic doctor.

Thank you for trusting me on your journey, and for sharing your success. 🌿✨

A new study in Nature Medicine finds that microplastics and nanoplastics—which are even smaller at 1 to 1000 nanometers in size—accumulate at higher levels in the human brain than in the liver and kidneys. The study also finds significantly higher concentrations of microplastics and nanoplastics in 2024 samples compared to 2016 samples, and higher levels in brains from people diagnosed with dementia.

To reduce the amount of microplastics in your body, you can reduce your exposure to plastic and microplastic-containing products.

✨ Reduce plastic use: Avoid single-use plastics, like plastic bags, takeout containers, and cups. Instead, use reusable bags, containers, and water bottles.

✨ Choose fresh foods: Buy fresh, unpackaged foods instead of prepackaged, canned, or convenience foods.

✨ Avoid plastic in the microwave or under other high sources of heat: Microwaving plastic containers can release microplastics into your food. Another commonly overlooked source is drinking hot drinks through plastic lids.

✨ Use a water filtration system: Use a water filter to remove microplastics from your tap water.

✨ Avoid products with microbeads: Microplastics can be found in some facial cleansers, toothpaste, and other products.

✨ Wear natural fabrics: Choose natural fabrics like cotton, linen, and wool instead of synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon.

✨ Exercise and sweat: Regular exercise and sauna sessions can help remove microplastics from your body through sweating.

While genetics play a role, environmental and lifestyle changes are powerful tools for managing autoimmune disease expression and progression.

By addressing these lifestyle factors, individuals can often reduce autoimmune flare-ups and improve overall health.

✨ Diet: The foods we eat play a critical role in either promoting inflammation or supporting immune health. A diet high in processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats can trigger chronic inflammation, which is a key driver in autoimmune disease. Conversely, anti-inflammatory diets rich in whole foods, such as vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber, can help regulate immune function.

✨ Stressors: Chronic stress impacts the immune system by increasing the production of inflammatory cytokines and disrupting hormonal balance. Elevated cortisol levels over time can impair the immune system’s ability to differentiate between self and non-self, leading to increased autoimmune activity. Stress management techniques, such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and therapy, have been shown to reduce symptom severity.

✨ Sleep: Poor or insufficient sleep weakens immune regulation and increases systemic inflammation. Sleep disturbances are particularly common in autoimmune patients, creating a vicious cycle of exacerbated symptoms. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule and prioritizing restorative sleep is essential for immune health.

✨ Exercise: Regular exercise helps reduce inflammation, improves circulation, and boosts overall immune function. However, excessive or high-intensity exercise can exacerbate inflammation and fatigue in autoimmune patients. Finding a balanced routine, such as low-impact activities like walking, swimming, or yoga, is beneficial for maintaining strength and reducing stress.

✨ Toxic Exposures: Environmental toxins such as pesticides, heavy metals, plastics, and industrial chemicals can act as triggers for autoimmune disease. These toxins may disrupt normal immune function, alter gut microbiota, and increase oxidative stress. Reducing exposure through clean eating, using natural products, and filtering water and air can minimize risk.

Simply going gluten-free may not be enough to manage autoimmune disease because proteins in other foods can cross-react with gluten.

Cross-reactivity occurs when proteins in certain foods are similar enough to gluten that they trigger an immune response. Common foods that cross-react with gluten include casein (a protein in dairy), eggs, yeast, oats, sesame, and some brands of instant coffee.

Casein is the most common food to cross-react with gluten. It’s important to distinguish this from lactose intolerance, which is caused by the inability to digest lactose—the sugar in milk. In contrast, casein is the protein in milk and can trigger an immune response in some individuals.

Other grains, seeds, and various foods may also cross-react with gluten. You can find out if you are sensitive to gluten cross-reactive foods via a simple blood test or by performing an elimination diet.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common autoimmune disease.

Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, leading to inflammation and potentially an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).

Common symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, muscle weakness, dry skin, and mood swings.

A simple blood test measuring for thyroperoxidase (TPO) and thyroglobulin (TG) antibodies can help diagnose Hashimoto’s. If one or both of these antibodies are positive, it indicates Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

You can start experiencing symptoms of Hashimoto’s many years prior to a thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) presenting high. Early detection is key to limiting tissue destruction and avoiding having to be on thyroid hormone replacement for the rest of your life.

Even those who already have enough thyroid tissue destruction to be on thyroid hormone replacement can still experience ongoing symptoms. This is because the immune dysregulation portion of this condition is neglected.

In my practice, I use lifestyle modifications and supplementation to modulate the immune response and get you back to feeling your BEST self!
