Disabling Chronic Low Back Pain?

A systematic review that included 47 studies found that chronic low back pain patients with higher levels of disability are less likely to have favorable outcomes from pharmacological treatment. The finding suggests that patients with chronic low back pain that interferes with daily activities should first try non-drug treatment options, like chiropractic care.

Trigger Point Therapy Helps Relieve Shoulder Pain.

For patients with active trigger points—hyperirritable spots found in skeletal muscle—in one or more muscles attached to the shoulder joints, a recent systematic review that included ten studies found that trigger point therapy is an effective treatment option, especially when used in conjunction with other conservative therapies provided by doctors of chiropractic.

Lower Limb Proprioception May Contribute to Low Back Pain.

Proprioception is the body's ability to sense where its various parts are in relation to one another for purposes of movement and balance. Examinations of adults with and without low back pain revealed deficits in proprioception in the ankles, knees, and hips of participants with low back pain. Because reduced proprioception in the lower limbs can affect postural stability, biomechanics, and posture, treatment for chronic low back pain may include therapies and exercises to address proprioception deficits.

An umbrella review that included 19 systematic reviews concluded that spinal manipulation—the primary form of treatment provided by chiropractors—is effective for reducing pain and improving function in patients with nonspecific chronic low back pain.

Thoracolumbar Fascia and Painful Scoliosis.

Among a group of individuals with scoliosis, researchers observed an association between thickness of the thoracolumbar fascia and both higher pain levels and reduced trunk flexibility. Doctors of chiropractic are well-versed in hands-on therapies to address thoracolumbar fascia thickness, as well as to slow or even reverse scoliosis-related spinal curve progression.

Risk Factors for Knee Pain in High School Volleyball Players.

An analysis of questionnaire and performance data collected from 82 high school volleyball players revealed that 19.5% had knee pain, and the risk was greatest in those with a history of low back pain and reduced flexibility in the lower extremities.

Weak Trunk Muscles May Worsen Neck Pain Disability.

Examinations of 58 women revealed that those with moderate-to-severe disability related to chronic neck pain are more likely to exhibit weak trunk muscles. The findings suggest healthcare providers should assess trunk muscle strength in chronic neck pain patients and prescribe strengthening exercises, if needed, as part of their overall treatment approach.

Lower Extremity Muscle Tightness and Chronic Low Back Pain.

Examinations of 52 patients with non-specific low back pain revealed those with tighter leg muscles, especially when coupled with greater variation in muscle tightness between the dominant and non-dominant sides, were more likely to report higher levels of pain intensity and disability in their lower back. The finding demonstrates the importance of examining the patient beyond the area of chief complaint as issues in adjacent areas of the body may contribute to or even be an underlying cause of the presenting issue.

Risk Factors for Prolonged Whiplash Recovery.

Among a sample of 103 patients with neck pain following a motor vehicle collision, researchers observed that higher initial disability and pain catastrophizing (the tendency to describe pain in exaggerated terms) are associated with up to a five-times increased risk for ongoing whiplash symptoms.

Low Back Treatment to Help Manage Knee Osteoarthritis?

Doctors of chiropractic are trained to consider the whole person when assessing a patient for a condition like knee pain, as issues beyond the knee may be a contributing factor or even the underlying cause of the presenting complaint. This is illustrated in a recent study in which patients with osteoarthritis of the knee experienced improvements in knee pain, stiffness, and function following manipulative therapy treatment applied to the lower back.
