Starting on Monday, December 13, I am launching a brand new program I have been working on - the Fit4T1D Challenge.

Many type 1 diabetics are hesitant to exercise because of constantly experiencing dramatic swings with their blood sugar during and after their workouts.

But it doesn’t have to be this way!

As a type 1 diabetic of 25 years, I have taken my practical experience of managing the daily ups and downs and combined it with over a decade of experience diving into the research and testing various exercise strategies out on myself during my own workouts.

I have put it all together in a simple system that I am going to be launching on Monday and teaching over the course of 5 days.

🩸I used to believe that I needed to have my blood glucose above 150 if I was going to exercise, and especially if I was going to do cardio.

🧁So I would load myself up with carbs before my workouts to try to prevent myself from going low.

🚀 Most of the time it would work, but there were many times when it would backfire and my blood glucose would skyrocket.

🥴After following this strategy for over a decade, my A1c was a wreck.

😳I knew something had to change if I was going to stay healthy long-term.

🔥I tried many strategies to solve this for me, but it wasn’t until I changed HOW I was exercising that my blood glucose became a lot more stable during and after my workouts.

💯 The truth is that your exercise should stabilize your blood glucose levels, not throw them for a loop.

🥵And yes, this even includes your cardio workouts.

🍦I am eating ice cream tonight.

🚫As a T1D, the thought of eating ice cream (or any sweets for that matter) can seem completely off limits.

But what if it didn’t have to be??

🙅‍♂️And no, I’m not talking about keto ice cream or anything low carb, either.

🤤I’m talking real, not-that-great-for-anybody ice cream.

Here’s the thing - while many T1Ds either go super low carb with their diet or go completely plant based to try to manage their blood sugar, I don’t do either.

🔥And yet… my most recent A1c was 6.0.

🤯How is that possible?!?

‼️It’s because of the one thing I do more consistently than anything else - exercise.

💯 And I exercise in a way that is specifically designed to build my insulin sensitivity and stabilize my blood glucose levels.

🎢 While many T1Ds experience the blood sugar rollercoaster when they workout, there are principles that I follow to completely avoid that.

As a Type 1 Diabetic, you have to consider how EVERYTHING affects your blood glucose levels. The #1 reason I hear why T1Ds don’t exercise is they don’t know what the effects will be on their BGs. There are (at least) 2 HUGE problems with this: 1) Exercise should help to stabilize your BGs in the short term; 2) Exercise should keep your BGs stable over the long term. What is one thing you are going to do in #2019 to make sure your are well controlled? I am pledging to exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. I am also going to continue to eat a lower carb, higher fat diet. My last reading was 5.8, and my goal for 2019 is to get it to 5.6 or below. 💪🏼🤓👊🏼

I learned something the other day about how blood glucose levels may respond to exercise while on a low carb/high fat diet. Because exercise often causes glycogen to be released and broken down from the liver, blood glucose levels can rise with exercise. What’s more though, is if your body has adapted to utilizing fat for fuel due to a low carb/high fat diet, your blood glucose levels may stay elevated for longer because your body will be using fat to fuel your workout & recovery and not as much of the glucose that has been broken down from the glycogen. One way to potentially combat this is to control for the intensity of your workout. This is, in my opinion, the number one variable to consider for Type 1 Diabetics when they are exercising. One of the top reasons Type 1 Diabetics don’t exercise is because of uncertainty in regards to how their blood glucose leaves will respond. However, if you understand the effects certain ways of exercising have on BG levels, you can use exercise to stabilize your blood glucose levels and have less concern about them being sent all over the map. Have you ever noticed that your BGs over the weekend run drastically different than during the week? I still workout on the weekends, but I am rarely as active throughout the day as I am during the week. This highlights the difference between what we call Special Event Exercise and All The Time Exercise. Have you ever done a web search for exercise and Type 1 Diabetes? I did, and the results SHOCKED me. So much info out there is geared towards using exercise to lower blood glucose levels. If you have been following my page for any length of time, you will know why I have an issue with this — Exercise should be used to STABILIZE BGs, not cause them to fluctuate. If there is one thing that all T1Ds can do while they are lifting weights to decrease the likelihood that their blood glucose levels rise after, it is this: shift your focus while you are exercising to squeezing your muscles. Check out today’s video to catch the details! 💪🏼🤓👊🏼

As a Type 1 Diabetic, there are 4 variables you need to keep in mind while you are exercising to ensure that exercise stabilizes your blood glucose levels instead of throwing them for a loop. 1) Intensity 2) Time of Day 3) Insulin* 4) Food* *Relative to BG. Blood glucose levels not cooperating with your workout plans can be one of the more frustrating aspects of being a Type 1 Diabetic. There are 2 things I recommend you do if you run into this issue. 1) Vow to get your workout in even if you have to push it back to later in the day; 2) Adjust what you plan to do during your workout. These 2 things can keep you sane when you know you need to exercise but your blood glucose levels are all out of whack.
