Have you heard of the gut-liver axis? ๐Ÿ™‹

Have you noticed that our gut microbiome (the microbes that reside in the digestive tract) is getting a lot of press lately, including from me? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Recently, scientists and clinicians have been captivated by the microorganisms in our gastrointestinal tract and their broad impact on all bodily processes.

In fact, it has been concluded in the natural health and medical sphere that you can't really affect overall wellness without addressing gut health.

This is why there's so much ado about the how the gut influences various organs.๐Ÿค“

For example, the gut-brain axis is quite popular. ๐Ÿง

However, many other gut-organ connections, including the gut-thyroid link, and thankfully, the bidirectional relationship between the gut-liver, is also starting to gain more attention.

In my opinion, the last pair-up is crucial!

Our liver doesn't get enough accolades, yet is responsible for regulating over 500 different functions while also interacting with virtually every organ in your body. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Therefore, itโ€™s not enough to just โ€œtreat the gutโ€ when there are hormonal, mood, digestive, or any other symptoms.

You also need to examine the liver.

Furthermore, you cannot have a healthy liver if your gastrointestinal tract, its lining, and microbiota are dysfunctional

In my video post, I provide insight on how a breakdown in our digestive tract specifically affects the liver, leads to liver disease, and ultimately negatively affects the whole body.

On a more positive note, I also provide some naturopathic and functional medicine interventions that benefit gut-liver health.

Topics include:
โœ”๏ธ a quick summary of the liver-gut axis
โœ”๏ธliver diseases from an unhealthy gut-liver axis
โœ”๏ธconventional and functional medicine tests to assess gut-liver function
โœ”๏ธthe role of probiotics, nutraceuticals, and lifestyle for a healthy liver-gut relationship

Get the link by commenting below and learn how to optimize gut-liver health.

By promoting both intestinal and liver health, you can positively influence many health outcomes and wellness parameters. This can lead to better brain, hormone, and mind-body balance.

Blessings.

According to the CDC, cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in the United States, with heart disease killing one person every 34 seconds. ๐Ÿซฃ

In fact, CVD kills more females than breast cancer, yet doesn't get the press or attention in women's health.

Conventional medicine is too focused on the downstream effects of our physiology, such as high cholesterol.

But there's so much more to healthy hearts.

We need a new approach to cardiovascular care.

One that treats all the underlying factors contributing to unhealthy hearts, is personalized, nurtures our beloved organ, and addresses the whole person.

In this video, I summarize some of the most important information to consider when tending to your most adored organ. ๐Ÿ’

You will discover how conventional medicine is missing the mark to mend our hearts and why we need a holistic and integrative approach. ๐Ÿ’Ÿ

Iโ€™ll also describe how essential oils benefit cardiovascular health. ๐Ÿ’ง

Topics include:
โ™ฅ๏ธ Risk factors for heart disease, both uncontrollable and modifiable
๐Ÿซก The great cholesterol debate
๐Ÿ’Š The benefits and side effects of statin drugs
๐Ÿ’‘ The mind-body-heart link
๐Ÿ‘ฉ The gender gap in cardiovascular care

Your spleen is one of the most underappreciated organs. ๐Ÿ˜”

A healthy spleen is essential for fighting infections and regulating immune responses.

Essential oils can tonify the spleen and support a healthy immune system by:
๐Ÿ’ง stimulating lymphatic flow
๐Ÿ’ง reducing congestion
๐Ÿ’ง aiding in the removal of cellular waste and damaged blood cells
๐Ÿ’ง promoting white blood cell production.

Grief and trauma can have lasting imprints on the brain, leading to prolonged emotional, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. ๐Ÿ˜’

Research shows that your sense of smell impacts physiological processes, aiding healing and trauma release by interpreting the mental, physical, and emotional world, and creating safety. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Olfactory receptors (ORs) act as chemical sensors throughout the body, linking smell to nervous system regulation and brain health. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ

Trauma, is not just an emotional wound, it is also a physical experience that gets โ€œstuckโ€ in the mind and body as tension needing release. ๐Ÿ˜ง

It can cause various physical, cognitive, and mental symptoms and lead to disconnection and numbness.

The somatic nervous system processes sensory information and allows you to move and control your body. ๐Ÿƒ

Somatic practices can help to address the deep imprint of trauma and release stored physiological and energy, reconnecting you to your body.

Principles of Somatic Healing include:
๐Ÿชท regulating the nervous system
๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ increasing body awareness
๐Ÿค— promoting safety
๐Ÿ›‘ discharge and completion

Smell supports healing trauma by connecting to the brainโ€™s limbic system and body regions for emotional release.

Scents like Lavender provide safe sensory anchors, aiding emotional regulation.

Smell bridges stimulus and response, managing feelings and enhancing self-awareness.

Specific oil blends, like Fascia Release and Limbic Reset, help release stored trauma and promote relaxation.

They can be used in conjunction with somatic healing, the Aroma Freedom Technique, and the ScentMap Method, I discussed this in my most recent video blog.

Digestive issues are common today.๐Ÿ˜ž

Sometimes taking a supplement can be hard to address the root cause, as you need to be able to absorb it! ๐Ÿค”

Essential oils help modulate digestion in a variety of ways:
๐Ÿ’ง they act as carminatives, helping with gas
๐Ÿ’ง they support the microbiome
๐Ÿ’ง they support neurotransmitters
๐Ÿ’ง they calm the mind-body to enhance the parasympathetic nervous system
๐Ÿ’ง they can be used to enhance vagal tone
๐Ÿ’ง they support blood sugar balance and assist with digestive function
๐Ÿ’ง they modulate inflammation and oxidative stress
๐Ÿ’ง they support liver detoxification

One are overlooked often is how important vagal tone is for digestion.

You need to be calm to be order to properly digest your food.

An essential oil blend applied to the vagus nerve point behind the ears can stimulate it and this leads to the stimulation of:
โœ”๏ธ saliva
โœ”๏ธstomach acid
โœ”๏ธgastric motility
โœ”๏ธdigestive enzymes
โœ”๏ธbile release
โœ”๏ธgut motility and nutrient absorption
โœ”๏ธgut integrity

Essential oils can also support pancreas function, such as:
๐Ÿ’œ Anise Seed โ€“ promotes insulin sensitivity and digestive enzyme function
๐Ÿ’œCucumber Seed: calms inflammation and encourages cellular regeneration
๐Ÿ’œGeranium: support hormonal balance and antioxidant activity
๐Ÿ’œRose: helps modulate stress and blood sugar fluctuations

We are being exposed to a lot of upheaval in our modern world from various sources.๐ŸŒ

These chronic stressors can multiply the strain that we are already up against from life's inevitable changes, losses, and transitions.๐Ÿ˜’

In my previous video post, I reviewed the multi-faceted aspects of grief, its common symptoms, and how it can lead to either post-traumatic growth or results in prolonged and heightened activation of the nervous system.

When unresolved, chronic grief can negatively affect cognitive, emotional, and physical health and decrease oneโ€™s quality of life.๐Ÿ˜”

Thankfully, we have tools that can support us with coping with hard situations and aid our healing.

Essential oils are an effective modality that can help us deal with loss and difficult emotions in a healthy way. ๐Ÿ’ง

These aromatic allies can be used to assist us in our ability to move forward and enhance our enjoyment of life after loss. ๐Ÿฅฐ

In my latest video post, I continue my discussion on how essential oils affect brain function and highlight specific oils that can aid with alleviating some of the symptoms of grief.

I also explore how the Aroma Freedom Technique (AFT) and other somatic practices can help resolve hard emotions and assist with a positive transformation after a jarring event.

Topics include:
๐Ÿ“– A review of how essential oils can help with grief
๐Ÿง  How essential oils impact neuroplasticity through the Aroma Freedom Technique (AFT)

With the new year, many are considering detoxification and other avenues for "purifying."๐Ÿค”

It is true that we live in a toxic world ๐Ÿงช and that supporting the body can help enhance our health.

We don't have to be fearful of this or create deprivation and punishment. But, we can be proactive. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Binders and essential oils can support our body's natural ability to remove toxins and assist with healing and restoring vitality without triggering restriction and deprivation. ๐Ÿ‘

Nourishing our mind-body-spirit and also being mindful of aiding our physical bodies stressors can be a way to nurture ourselves in the new year. ๐Ÿฅฐ

It's always best to consult with an integrative doctor when one is considering any form of detox support to ensure proper nutrition, hydration, and emotional balance are in place.

Brain fog can make one feel fatigued, both physically and emotionally. ๐Ÿฅฑ

It can also lead to anxiety, depression, and decreased function due to the brain not optimally functioning.

Certain plant compounds have been shown to decrease inflammation, oxygenate the brain, enhance circulation, move lymph, and calm the nervous system. ๐Ÿ‘

Essential oils have an ability to support brain health and function due to their multifaceted actions. ๐Ÿ’ง

They are natural antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, circulatory and lymph enhancers, and they modulate neurotransmitters. ๐Ÿง

These properties can help to lift brain fog and support emotional health and cognition.

I also have a post on how essential oils can help with fatigue and focus.

My favorites that I use with my clients, along with Parasympathetic blend, include peppermint, rosemary, sage, jasmine, and citrus oils.

About Sarah LoBisco, ND, IFCMP & BreakFree Medicine

As a licensed naturopathic doctor and certified functional medicine practitioner, my passion is to empower individuals to achieve their current health goals. This is to remove the blockages of fear and worry of diseases and symptoms that keep them from living their passions and fullest lives.

My typical client comes in with reports of some or all of the following: mood disturbances, digestive issues, hormonal and menstrual irregularities, and low energy. They may have other diagnoses such as ADHD, anxiety, autoimmunity, bipolar, celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, depression, OCD, thyroid disease, or other complaints of just โ€œfeeling not right.โ€

I help these individuals (and often their family members) get to the root cause of their symptoms. I do my health detective work and utilize my knowledge of biochemical individuality and epigenetics to individualize a wellness plan that aims to bring them back into health harmony. In our consults, we search out any hidden factors or blockages that will inhibit their body and mind from getting what they need to be optimized and revitalized. We then work together to go over their wellness plan and agree on an action plan that fits best for their needs and goals.

I match each personโ€™s unique genetic makeup and environmental influences with the best supplemental nutritional, herbals, essential oils, and lifestyle practices that work for them at the current time. This protocol is updated and tweaked as they regain body harmony. Once their main symptoms are resolved, they typically pop-in for bi-yearly โ€œwellness visitsโ€ and โ€œhealth optimization.โ€
