In this short clip, I’m sharing how smell directly influences the brain and nervous system through the limbic system 🧠

It’s one of the fastest sensory pathways we have, and natural aromas like essential oils 🌿 are powerful tools that influence brain–body regulation.

Their impact goes beyond aroma, working through their biochemical properties to influence how the brain and body respond to stress, mood, and balance.

In my work as a naturopathic and functional medicine doctor, I don’t separate emotions such as joy from physiology ❤️

Because it isn’t separate.

Joy is deeply tied to:
✨ Nervous system regulation
✨ Brain chemistry (dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin)
✨ The body’s ability to handle and recover from stress

And clinically, this shows up in something very real: resilience.

Not just “feeling better,” but the capacity to stay regulated under pressure—and return to balance more easily.

This is one reason I use essential oils in practice 🌿

Because scent directly interacts with the brain’s limbic system, blends like:
• Limbic Reset®
• Parasympathetic®
• Small Intestine Support™
.. can help support emotional state shifts and nervous system regulation.

I also frequently use the Joyful Blend 💛

It supports the nervous, digestive, endocrine, and cardiovascular systems—reflecting how interconnected emotional and physical health really is.

In practice, I’ve seen it support:
✨ Emotional regulation
✨ Stress resilience
✨ Self-care, self-worth, and connection

It was also part of a case study I published where we saw meaningful improvements in anxiety and emotional balance.

If you want to go deeper into how essential oils support joy, I can share a resource and explained how I integrate blends like this in my clinical work.

In this short reel, I’m sharing a quick overview of how smell influences the brain and nervous system through the limbic system 🧠

It’s one of the most immediate sensory pathways we have, and natural aromas like essential oils 🌿 play a powerful role in brain–body regulation beyond just scent.

This is part of a larger conversation around brain health—how everyday sensory inputs are constantly shaping mood, stress response, and emotional balance.

Your gut health doesn’t improve just by adding probiotics.

That’s only one piece.

What really matters is the terrain they’re entering.

The intestinal mucosa plays a central role in that terrain—it impacts absorption, microbial balance, and how efficiently the gut is functioning overall.

When it’s supported 🌿 there’s often more stability and resilience.
When it’s not, things can feel unpredictable or “off,” even when protocols look solid on paper.

In my clinical approach, I’m always looking at the gut as an interconnected system—gut lining integrity, nervous system regulation, and microbiome balance 🌿🧠

But I also zoom out further, because gut health is never isolated.

Lifestyle patterns, environmental exposures, and metabolic stressors all shape what’s happening internally.

This is where essential oils can be a useful part of a broader holistic strategy.

Here are some I commonly work with:

🌿 Peppermint
🌱 Ginger
🌼 Fennel
🌿 Oregano
🍋 Lemon
🧬 Intestinal Mucosa Blend (peppermint, ginger, fennel, tarragon, anise)

Each one brings a different layer of support depending on what’s needed—digestion, microbial balance, motility, or gut-brain signaling.

It’s always a layered approach.

Perhaps your gut needs a little more TLC?

🍊 Grapefruit is one of those foods that gets put on a pedestal…
and then quietly feared.

It’s rich in nutrients, antioxidants, and supportive plant compounds 🌿
…but also known for interacting with certain medications ⚠️

So which is it—supportive or something to avoid?

As an essential oil doctor, I'm often asked if its safe to use grapefruit oil with medications, is it the same warning as the fruit and juice??

Here’s where the nuance comes in…

The concern is tied to compounds in the fruit and juice that affect how some medications are processed in the body.

But grapefruit essential oil?
It has a completely different chemical profile—
with mostly volatile compounds like limonene and only trace amounts of those interacting components.

✨ Same plant. Different form. Different effect.

This is why understanding the details matters in natural medicine.

It’s not about labeling something as “good” or “bad”—
it’s about context, individuality, and working with the body.

This is personalized medicine, naturopathic and functional medicine style. 😎

🌿 Next week is Naturopathic Medicine Week!

Across the United States 🇺🇸 and Canada 🇨🇦, naturopathic doctors and their patients are celebrating a form of healthcare that’s been quietly transforming lives.

Maybe you’ve heard of naturopathic medicine but aren’t quite sure what it means 🤔 Or maybe you’re curious if it could help you—we’re glad you’re here.

This year’s theme, Healthcare that Listens. Medicine that Looks Deeper., reflects how NDs practice: taking time to hear your whole story, and looking beyond symptoms to find the root cause 🌱

NDs see the body as an interconnected system with an inherent ability to heal 💫 Their approach includes nutritional counseling, botanical medicine, lifestyle changes, and physical medicine.

All next week, May 3–9 📅, we’ll be sharing what naturopathic medicine really looks like in practice—the philosophy, the methods, and the difference it can make.

Hi friends, 💞

Today I’m sharing the fourth pillar of brain health—sensory input—and specifically how something as simple as smell has a powerful influence on the brain and nervous system.

👃Smell is unique because it bypasses typical sensory filtering and connects directly into the limbic system. That’s why scent can shift mood, memory, stress response, and emotional state so quickly.

In this video, I cover:
✔️ Smell as a direct pathway to the brain
✔️ How scent influences mood, memory, stress response, and emotional regulation
✔️ The impact of synthetic fragrances, cleaning products, and environmental toxins on the nervous system
✔️ Essential oils as biochemical signals that go far beyond scent
✔️ The relationship between aromatics, stress hormones, neurotransmitters, and vagal tone
✔️ Olfactory training and neuroplasticity support
✔️ What changes in smell may reveal about neurological and immune health
✔️ Simple daily sensory rituals for nervous system support

What I love about this is how simple it actually is—small sensory inputs, done consistently, can help support brain and nervous system resilience over time.💫

If you’d like the full article and resources, just comment “smell” below and I’ll send them your way.

Looking forward to hearing what resonated with you most.🌿

Mindset isn’t separate from physiology.

From a naturopathic and functional medicine perspective, the way you perceive stress directly influences your nervous system, brain function, and your ability to adapt and recover 🧠🌿

When we understand this connection, we begin to see that stress isn’t only a mental experience—it’s a full-body physiological process.

In this short clip, I share the foundation of how I approach stress regulation in clinical practice, and why mindset plays such a key role in physical health outcomes.

✨ The full video expands on this with practical tools including breathwork, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation strategies.

🌿 Rosemary isn’t just a culinary herb—it’s a clinically relevant botanical with meaningful effects on the brain and body.

From a naturopathic and functional medicine perspective, I don’t view essential oils like rosemary as quick fixes for a "brain boost."

They are part of a broader, holistic, personalized strategy to support how the brain is functioning.

🧠 Why rosemary oil stands out:

🧠 Supports memory + recall
→ Helps modulate acetylcholine, a key neurotransmitter for learning

⚡ Enhances focus + cognitive performance
→ Inhalation has been shown to influence speed and accuracy

🌿 Promotes mental clarity + alertness
→ Helpful during fatigue or brain fog

✨ Provides antioxidant + anti-inflammatory support
→ Extending beyond the brain into whole-body resilience

🧩 Why this matters:

Symptoms like poor focus or forgetfulness don’t come from one place.
They may be connected to:

⚡ Neurotransmitter imbalances
🔥 Inflammation + oxidative stress
🌿 Nervous system + stress physiology patterns
☑️ Underlying physiological or metabolic imbalances
⚗️ Environmental exposures

That’s why the goal isn’t to “stimulate the brain”—
it’s to support it in a way that aligns with the individual’s physiology.

🌿 Rosemary can be a powerful tool within that framework—when used appropriately.

💡 Simple ways to integrate:
🌬️ Diffuse during focused work or study
👃 Inhale before tasks requiring memory or recall
💆‍♀️ Add to scalp or body blends for circulation support + healthy hair

🧠 The key is always personalization.

Feeling stressed, wired, or like your mind won’t slow down? 🧠

In today’s fast-paced world, many of us are living in a constant state of nervous system activation—and over time, that impacts how we think, feel, and function.

The encouraging part is that supporting your brain doesn’t have to be complicated.

Simple practices like:
🧘‍♀️ Mindfulness
🌬️ Breathwork
📝 Journaling
⏸️ Taking intentional pauses

can help regulate your nervous system and build resilience over time.

💡 I break this down further in my full article, including practical steps you can start using right away.

🌿 Allergies, Histamine & a More Holistic Approach

If allergy season has been hitting you harder lately, there’s often more going on beneath the surface.

In my practice, I look at allergies through a root-cause lens—and histamine plays a central role.

Histamine is important for the body, but when it becomes imbalanced, it can contribute to:
• Sneezing + congestion
• Skin reactions
• Digestive issues
• Brain fog, anxiety, and sleep struggles

🌱 That’s why I love incorporating essential oils into my protocols.

They can help support the body by:
✨ Calming inflammation
✨ Supporting detox pathways
✨ Enhancing digestion
✨ Reducing oxidative stress
✨ Regulating the nervous system

🌿 Some of my go-to oils include:
🌸 Lavender – calming for body + mind
🌿 Peppermint – helpful for head tension + breathing
🌱 Eucalyptus – supports open, comfortable airways
🍋 Lemon – assists detox + lymphatic flow
🌳 Frankincense – grounding + immune support

🌼 Plus, I often incorporate a Histamine Support Blend—designed to support inflammation, mast cell activity, and nervous system balance.

✨ This kind of synergy is where essential oils really shine.

And one of the most overlooked connections?
👉 Histamine + mood.

🌿 Essential oils offer a beautiful way to support both the body and mind—gently and holistically.
