"The U.S. Mint has released a new quarter honoring the late disability justice activist Stacey Park Milbern, marking the first time a woman in a wheelchair -- and the first Korean American -- has been featured on U.S. currency.
Born with congenital muscular dystrophy, Stacey was one of the pioneers of the disability justice movement and helped to pass a law in North Carolina requiring disability history education. Stacey passed away on her 33rd birthday in 2020, but her legacy continues to inspire change and greater inclusion." - via Lean In
The American Women Quarters Program, which began in 2022, has honored a wide array of trailblazing American women across diverse fields including civil rights, science, arts, and government, featuring five new designs annually. The four-year program concludes in 2025 after producing 20 quarters total; in addition to Milbern, this year's honorees are Ida B. Wells, Juliette Gordon Low, Dr. Vera Rubin, and Althea Gibson. The program's coins have been the first to feature a Black woman, an LGBT person, a Hispanic American, an Asian American, a Jewish American, and a Native Hawaiian on U.S. currency.
