We were fortunate to have the opportunity today to visit Back Creek in far Western Virginia and offer Rudra Abhishekam to a swayambhu Lingam there.
Back Creek River is a very sacred spot. It is located just miles from the border of Virginia and West Virginia in Bath County. The River gorge runs between Back Creek Mountain to the East and Little Mountain to the West. The whole area is permeated by a powerful presence of Lord Shiva, especially down in the gorge and up the Western slope of Back Creek Mountain. The river produces many swayambhu Shiva Lingams and many fossiliferous rocks also. The area has unique features like ducks that blow 58 degree air from the ground and many deep pools on the mountain. The area is as powerful as any Temple and possibly the most powerful spiritual site in Virginia.
The water in Back Creek River is very pure and sacred. The River feeds into the Jackson River which merges with the Cowpasture River to form the James which feeds into the Chesapeake Bay. The water has a unique color which is often bright blue, but changes and may appear green, pink, yellow, black, brown, and also white. Visiting the sacred site is like visiting the Holy rivers in India, though the location is unknown to most people in modern times. This area was a place where Natives used to meet occasionally for community prayers and purification, similar to Kumbha melas held in India. Certain spots around here were pilgrimages by Natives here trouble to conceive. The place is symbolic of Shiva and Shakti with Back Creek Mountain representing Shiva and Little Mountain representing Shakti.
We could not get as far as we normally like to go along the trail due to snow on the ground. The water was quite cold, so standing in the water for Abhishekam was somewhat of a tapasya. But many native wildflowers were blooming like bloodroot, trout lilly, and several types of hepatica. It is always a great blessing to visit this sacred site.
