If something matters to you, then it’s worth talking about. It doesn’t have to be extreme or make sense to anyone else. Your thoughts, your feelings and your experiences matter. Don’t wait until it gets worse, you deserve a space to be heard.

Anxiety has a way of sounding very convincing. You can easily start to believe it’s true. But just because a thought feels real, doesn’t mean it is. If you can get into a habit of taking a pause and questioning those thoughts, those thoughts won’t hold as much weight. You don’t have to believe every thought you think.

Sometimes the hardest seasons are the ones that show the most growth. That situation that felt heavy, overwhelming or uncomfortable had a purpose, even if you didn’t see it at the time. Remember that those hard seasons are never wasted.

There are a lot of misconceptions about therapy, and these can keep people from getting the support that they truly need. But the truth is that therapy isn’t about being “broken”, being told what to do or needing to have everything figured out. It is a safe space to slow down, take time to understand yourself, and work on making changes at a pace that is good for you. If you’ve been worried about getting started, it might be worth taking that first step.

When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to just try and push through. But sometimes that can make things worse. Quick, intentional pauses can make such a difference and allow your nervous system to reset. This isn’t about fixing everything, but it’s about calming your body enough to be able to take the next step. As you slow down, you allow yourself to think clearly. Try one (or all) of these steps when you start to feel that overwhelm creeping in.

Some people avoid therapy because they have the wrong idea of what it is. While you might talk about your past, it’s more than just that. You will begin to learn how to understand yourself, you will start to notice patterns you didn’t even realize were there, and you will have a safe space to share freely. You don’t need to fall apart to start. You can start therapy simply because you are tired of feeling stuck.

EMDR(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps your brain process experiences that feel stuck, so they don’t show up as intense triggers in your life. For many people, trauma isn’t just a memory, it’s something their body is constantly reacting to. EMDR helps to create distance between you and this reaction. You may not forget what happened, but you no longer feel like you are still living in it.

You don’t have to explain your healing to people who don’t know what you have been through. It’s okay if people don’t agree with your boundaries. It’s okay if people question your decisions. You are allowed to say no without a long explanation. You are healing at your own pace and not everyone will understand that; and that’s okay.

Your struggles shaped you and stretched you, but they don’t define your entire story. You are not just the hard seasons you’ve walked through. You also have the growth, resilience and healing that are parts of your story. It’s okay if your story is still messy or still being written. Just remember that this isn’t where it ends.

Everyday doesn’t have to be labeled as “good” or “bad”. Sometimes it’s just heavy, confusing or somewhere in the middle. By putting these feelings into words, you become more self-aware, which helps when addressing those feelings. Remember that you don’t have to fix everything, but noticing where you are at is a great place to start.

Just because you are getting everything done doesn’t always mean you are okay. A lot of people silently carry anxiety, burnout or emotional overwhelm, but still show up every day. You don’t have to fall apart to deserve support. If this resonates with you, start by building in small pauses throughout your day to help to reset. Remember that everything doesn’t have to be done 100% all the time. Work to create boundaries; you are allowed to say no, delay something or ask for help. Holding it all together doesn’t have to come at the cost of your well-being.

Helping people find their way since...

Compass Counseling officially launched in April, 2018. Compass Counseling exists to help you find your way through the challenges you face. While it launched in April, it has been a long time in the making. As long as I can remember, people around me have been drawn to me to talk through any struggles they may be going through. This first led me into pastoral ministry, which I enjoyed greatly, but realized over time that it was the personal, one-on-one aspects of ministry that I saw the most change through. I connected with people and watched as God changed their lives!

I soon began to feel that I needed to pursue further education in the counseling field, and God gave me the dream of launching Compass Counseling. I received my Master’s Degree in Counseling in 2014 and have been pursuing this dream ever since. There have been challenges toward reaching my dreams, but God has helped me along the way. Now I dream of helping you reach yours through His power.
