Sometimes the hardest seasons of life can feel endless. The weight feels heavy and the path seems unclear; but even in those moments, there is still light. Healing, growth and clarity often begin in the places that we thought could break us.

Emotional safety is often something that is learned over time. Real connection happens when you begin to experience this in relationships. If emotional safety hasn’t always been a part of your relationships, here are a few places you can start: practice expressing small needs, start setting boundaries, notice when you feel tense around someone, and pay attention to how people respond to your honesty. For many people, these are things that are learned, practiced and built over time.

Sometimes mental exhaustion builds slowly through the small, everyday things that we barely notice. Individually, these things might seem small, but they can quietly drain the mental energy that you rely on to focus and connect. As you start to notice these patterns, you can work toward creating healthier boundaries with your time and attention. You don’t have to eliminate every area of stress, but small changes can help protect your mental energy.

Anxiety has a way of feeling very convincing, telling you that urgency means danger. The discomfort can convince you that something is wrong and that you need certainty before you can move forward. But most of the time, anxiety isn’t predicting what will happen, it’s trying to protect you by preparing for the worst. Learning to recognize when it is your anxiety talking is a great first step in taking back your power. Your anxiety might never go away, but you can stop letting it control your decisions.

You second guess yourself, you doubt your instincts, you over analyze, you wait for “proof”. But your mind and your body notice more than what you realize, even when your doubt is getting in the way. Trust in yourself and stop doubting because your instincts notice what your brain sometimes ignores.

The patterns that helped you cope at one point in your life might be the things keeping you stuck now. That doesn’t mean you are weak, it just means you have adapted to what you know. But you can learn new patterns, build tolerance and expand your world again.

Start small:
· Set a 5-minute timer and do a task for those 5 minutes
· Schedule an avoided task into your calendar
· Label what it is that you are avoiding

You can be productive, dependable and seem “fine” to others while still not feel safe being fully known. The feeling of safety with others is vital for emotional connection. This can look like not minimizing your stress, not being the “strong one” all the time, not editing your feelings so others can be comfortable. You can be both strong and supported; you don’t have to keep carrying everything alone.

When your nervous system is overloaded, your brain can shift into survival mode which can look like you are being lazy. But really, it’s that survival mode doesn’t care about productivity. Instead of feeling like there is something wrong with you, look at what it is your body needs right now. This could be support from others, rest, setting boundaries, physical movement or even seeking professional support. When these feelings come, this is your body’s way of protecting yourself.

A lot of people learned early on that being “the responsible one” can keep things stable. But constant self-reliance can easily turn into emotional isolation and exhaustion. You deserve more than just survival. The next time someone asks how you are, before quickly answering “I’m fine”, take a moment to pause and think about how you are truly feeling. Just naming the emotion is a great step toward a healthier emotion.

Closure isn’t often something that someone hands you. A lot of the time what you are wanting is relief. But healing doesn’t always come from having more answers. It comes from processing what happened, grieving what wasn’t and from learning how to regulate your emotions of the memory. Once you reach a place where your story no longer controls you, you work toward building internal resolution, and that is something no one can take from you.

You are enough, you have always been enough. Just because you might not feel like it sometimes, doesn’t mean that’s true. You are stronger than you think and you are capable of doing great things.

EMDR which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a treatment that helps people heal from trauma or emotional distress. This therapy is a way to help the brain reprocess a traumatic experience in a manageable way; by allowing your brain to realize this situation is no longer a threat. The goal is not to erase the past, but to reclaim the present. If you are curious about EMDR, feel free to reach out to our office for a free consultation!

Helping people find their way since...

Compass Counseling officially launched in April, 2018. Compass Counseling exists to help you find your way through the challenges you face. While it launched in April, it has been a long time in the making. As long as I can remember, people around me have been drawn to me to talk through any struggles they may be going through. This first led me into pastoral ministry, which I enjoyed greatly, but realized over time that it was the personal, one-on-one aspects of ministry that I saw the most change through. I connected with people and watched as God changed their lives!

I soon began to feel that I needed to pursue further education in the counseling field, and God gave me the dream of launching Compass Counseling. I received my Master’s Degree in Counseling in 2014 and have been pursuing this dream ever since. There have been challenges toward reaching my dreams, but God has helped me along the way. Now I dream of helping you reach yours through His power.

“The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.” - Proverbs 16:9
