Gum disease can start before adulthood. Here’s what every parent should know.

Even baby teeth need healthy gums.

We often think of gum disease as an adult problem—but the truth is, children and teens are also at risk for inflammation, bleeding, and early signs of periodontal issues.

Here’s why:
🔹 Kids may skip flossing or rush through brushing
🔹 Teens with braces are more prone to plaque buildup
🔹 High-sugar diets (juice, sports drinks, sticky snacks) can fuel bacteria
🔹 Hormonal changes during puberty can make gums more reactive

At Dr. Coppola’s Office, we tailor our preventive care to your child’s stage of development:
🦷 We track gum health starting at age 3
🦷 Teach age-appropriate brushing and flossing techniques
🦷 Recommend mouthguards to protect growing smiles during sports
🦷 Monitor spacing and eruption patterns that may impact hygiene

And we do it all in a way that feels safe, comfortable, and even fun.

✅ Early habits = lifelong healthy gums.

📞 Call us today at (518) 370-5038 to schedule your child’s next visit. We’d love to care for your family — from the first tooth on.

70% of adults have gum disease and most don’t even know it. Here’s why it matters for your heart.

Your gums aren’t just about your smile — they’re a window to your overall health.

🦷 Studies show that gum disease and heart disease are closely connected.
Bacteria from inflamed gums can enter your bloodstream, increasing your risk of heart complications — even if you don’t have any tooth pain.

📊 What the research tells us:
• 70% of adults have gum disease
• 50% of people with gum disease also have heart disease
• 80% of people with gum disease don’t know they have it

At Dr. Coppola’s Office, we take a preventive, whole-body approach to dental care — because your health starts with your mouth.

Let’s keep your smile — and your heart — healthy.

"2, 3, 4, 3…” If you’ve heard this during a cleaning, this post is for you.

Those numbers your hygienist calls out? They’re measuring your periodontal pockets and they’re a critical part of preventing gum disease.

Healthy gums have shallow pockets (1–3 mm). Deeper pockets can mean inflammation, infection, or even bone loss. We chart these numbers regularly to catch problems early and treat gently—before it becomes more serious.

💬 Got questions about your latest charting? Call us, we’ll be happy to explain!

🦷 Bleeding gums aren’t normal. Here’s what they might be telling you about your health.

September is Gum Health Awareness Month and there’s more going on under your smile than you might think.

Your gums are the foundation of your mouth and a window into your overall health. When something feels off, your gums will try to tell you. Here are a few signs you should never ignore:

🔴 Bleeding when brushing or flossing
It’s not “normal” to see pink in the sink. Bleeding is often one of the first signs of gum inflammation.

🟠 Redness and swelling
Healthy gums are pale pink and firm. If your gums are red, puffy, or tender to the touch, it could mean bacteria has begun irritating the tissue.

😷 Bad breath that won’t go away
Chronic bad breath even with regular brushing can be a sign that bacteria are hiding below the gumline.

When left untreated, gum inflammation can progress into periodontal disease a chronic condition that breaks down the bone and tissue holding your teeth in place. It’s also linked to heart disease, diabetes, and more.

🦷 The good news?
Gum disease is preventable—and often reversible when caught early.

At Dr. Coppola’s Office, we take a preventive approach to total health, starting with your gums.

📞 Call (518) 370-5038 to schedule your cleaning.

Every smile we care for has a team behind it. 💙

From the warm greeting at the front desk to the gentle touch in the hygiene room, to the assistants and coordinators making sure every detail is just right—our team is the heart of Dr. Coppola’s Office.

For many of you, these aren’t just the people who “work” at your dental office… they’re familiar faces you’ve trusted for years, sometimes even decades. You’ve watched them calm your child through their very first cleaning, cheer on a teenager who just got their braces off, or sit patiently with an elderly patient who needs extra care and comfort.

That’s what makes this office special. It’s not just dentistry—it’s relationships that grow over time. We’re proud to serve multi-generational families, seeing children, parents, and grandparents all under the same roof. Some of you have been with us long enough to see your children become parents themselves—and we don’t take that trust lightly.

Our office has grown and evolved over the years, with new technology and expanded spaces to better serve you. But the heart of what we do has never changed: providing exceptional care with compassion, integrity, and a personal touch.

💬 We’d love to hear from you! Has a member of our team made your visit easier, brighter, or more comfortable? Drop a comment below—we’d be honored to pass your words along.

When Dr. Sam Coppola opened his dental office above the Subway shop on Mohawk Avenue in 1950, he was told, “There aren’t enough patients in Scotia for a practice to succeed.”

But Dr. Sam wasn’t interested in simply filling an appointment book—he was building relationships. Many of you still remember the warm handshake when you walked through the door… the way he’d take his time explaining every step… and how he called you personally after a big procedure, just to make sure you were okay.

It wasn’t just dentistry, it was trust. It was knowing your dentist genuinely cared about you and your family.

For over 40 years, Dr. Sam cared for this community with skill, integrity, and heart. And when it was time to pass the torch, he placed it in the hands of his son, Dr. David Coppola—who grew up watching his father’s example and now carries that same philosophy into every patient interaction.

Today, Dr. David is proud to treat the fourth generation of some families who started with Dr. Sam’s very first patients. Every smile he cares for is a living testament to the relationships his father began building 75 years ago.

🦷 This isn’t corporate dentistry.
This is hometown care—rooted in trust, built on relationships, and passed down from father to son.

From the old office above Subway to our expanded home on Vley Road… our story is your story. Thank you for being part of it.

🧃🍎 Lunchbox season is back!
And we know it’s not always easy to balance quick, convenient, and tooth-friendly snacks.

We want to hear from you:
👇 What’s your child’s go-to school snack?

While you’re packing lunch, here are some smile-smart tips from our team:

🚫 Avoid sticky, chewy snacks like fruit snacks, dried fruit, and granola bars with caramel. They cling to teeth and fuel cavity-causing bacteria long after lunch is over.
🍭 Limit sugary drinks—juice boxes and sports drinks coat teeth in sugar and acid, increasing the risk of enamel erosion.

✅ Better choices?
• Crisp apples or carrot sticks help clean teeth naturally.
• Cheese cubes or string cheese can balance mouth pH and strengthen enamel.
• Plain water is always the best drink for a healthy mouth!

🦷 A few swaps can make a big difference in your child’s smile.

💬 Drop your kiddo’s favorite lunchbox snack in the comments!

It’s a quiet kind of milestone—but one that means everything to us.

Today, a young boy sat in our chair for his very first cleaning. His mom smiled as she filled out the forms, and said something we hear often but never take for granted:

“My grandfather came to Dr. Sam. My parents came to Dr. David. And now I bring my kids here.”

Three generations. One family. One small hometown office.

It’s not just about teeth—it’s about trust. It’s about the comfort of walking into a place that remembers your name, your smile, your story.

We’ve watched patients grow from toddlers to teens… and then come back with children of their own.

This is what keeps us grounded. This is what makes it all matter.

💙 Thank you, Scotia, for letting us be part of your family stories—generation after generation.

🏑⚽🏈 Backpacks aren’t the only thing being packed this month…

If your child is suiting up for fall sports, don’t forget to protect what matters most—their smile!

A custom-fit mouthguard is made from a mold of your child’s teeth. It’s comfortable, doesn’t interfere with speaking or breathing, and offers protection you can’t get from a store-bought guard.

🦷 A small investment today can prevent lifelong dental issues from injury.

📞 Call us to schedule your child’s mouthguard fitting before their first game!

At this time, this service is reserved for our established patients.
