For years rice has been the staple ingredient for toddler snacks, but new market entries are changing the story. Cassava and sorghum are now the base for several puff items. A recent article from CBS showcases new product launches and dives into the impact of these new ingredients. In summary, not all of these new launches meet consumer expectations for safety. The bright spot in the article was the new sorghum based puffs from Once Upon A Farm, that showed the lowest level of heavy metals among the products tested. Once Upon a Farm is not the only manufacturer to use sorghum for toddler snacks. These new products are driving the demand for sorghum from a whole new set of customers.

How is the 2024 sorghum crop looking in western Kansas?

Western Kansas received ideal levels of moisture in the spring after sorghum was planted. The height of summer brought high temperatures with very little rainfall, as has been common in years past in our area. This period of low moisture likely affected yields, but the good news is that late summer rains have boosted grain quality. Overall, yields may be down but quality is likely to be very high. High quality grain will translate into good yields in the mill and high quality sorghum ingredients. Due to our fully integrated supply chain, we source sorghum directly from our farmers and will secure the grain needed to fulfill customer contracts. Nu Life Market President Earl Roemer is planning field visits for late September, after which the sales team will be reaching out with pricing for 2025 contracts.

Last year, whole grain sorghum and whole grain sorghum flour were added in the USDA Food Buying Guide for Child Nutrition Programs. Recently whole grain popped sorghum was included, giving schools three new options for meeting the whole grain requirements.

Planting for regenerative sorghum is complete! Our farmers practice no till methods and plant sorghum seed into soil covered by residue from the previous crop. This ensures that soil stays covered to reduce erosion, trap in moisture, and keep carbon sequestered.
