Clocks officially fall back at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023. While this will afford some an extra hour of sleep, it also results in an earlier sunset and less daylight during regular daytime hours.

The changing of the clocks and essentially amount of available sun, weather changes such as cooler temperatures with increased rain or snow, and upcoming holiday can often lead to changes in both mental and physical health.

Some specific symptoms related to winter-time seasonal affective disorder (SAD) include:
* Oversleeping (hypersomnia)
* Overeating, particularly with a craving for carbohydrates
* Social withdrawal (feeling like “hibernating”)

These changes may be related to decreased serotonin levels or over production of melatonin, which are affected by exposure to sunlight & Vitamin D.

Treatment of SAD includes light therapy (sunlight or a specialized lamp)to help simulate being outdoors, talking about your feelings, staying active both mentally and physically.

If you feel that seasonal changes are affecting your quality of life, or that your symptoms include most serious concerns such as :
* Feeling depressed most of the day, nearly every day
* Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
* Experiencing changes in appetite or sleep
* Feeling sluggish or agitated
* Feeling hopeless or worthless
* Having frequent thoughts of death or su***de

** Psychiatric Medication Management Appointments - No Wait **

Have you called office after office trying to find a Psychiatrist only to learn there is a 6-10 month waiting list?

Did your previous provider continuously add medication after medications, without listening to your opinion?

Were you told that you needed to leave your current therapist and use someone "in the practice" just to receive medications?

As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner I have the ability to offer both medication management and therapy, but do NOT require both to receive care here.

I take my time getting to know each patient. I will educate you on your choices for treatment, listen to your concerns and desires, and work collaboratively with you to help you become symptom free.

Summer is the perfect time to start or make a change to your (or your child's) treatment. Email us today before the back-to-school rush, or the winter time blues start to set back in.

Immediate availability Monday - Thursday 9-5. Telehealth or in-person, ages 5-99.

Happy Wellness Wednesday! It's officially Spring 🌷

This is the season of renewal, fresh hope, and sunshine! As we move into spring, consider taking the time to assess the good things in life and show them gratitude.

Everyone can benefit from making an effort to practice gratitude every day. These 3 steps can help you start feeling more grateful, and appreciative of the good things in your life:

✨ Notice positive things, look for them, appreciate them.

✨ Savor, absorb, and really pay attention to those good things.

✨ Express your gratitude to yourself, write it down, or thank someone.

~Notice the Good Things in Your Life~

Start to notice and identify the things you are grateful for. Tune in to the small everyday details of your life and notice the good things you might sometimes take for granted. Try these ideas:

✨ Each day, think of 3 things you are grateful for. Nature. People. Community. Shelter. Creature comforts like a warm bed or a good meal. It's amazing what you notice when you focus on feeling grateful.

✨ Start a gratitude journal. Making a commitment to writing down good things each day makes it more likely that we will notice good things as they happen.

✨ Practice gratitude rituals. Some people say grace before a meal. Pausing in gratitude before eating doesn't have to be religious. It's a simple habit that helps us notice and appreciate the blessing of food on the table.

~Savor the Feeling of Gratitude~

There are moments when you naturally, right then and there, feel filled with gratitude. These are moments when you say to yourself, "Oh, wow, this is amazing!" or "How great is this!"

Pause. Notice and absorb that feeling of true, genuine gratitude. Let it sink in. Soak it up. Savor your blessings in the moment they happen.

~Express Gratitude~

Expressing gratitude is more than courtesy, manners, or being polite. It's about showing your heartfelt appreciation. When you thank someone, you're also practicing the first two gratitude skills: you've noticed something good, and you've genuinely appreciated it.

Happy Wellness Wednesday! Today we're looking at the question, "What is wellness, and why is it important?"

Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes, so that instead of just surviving, you're thriving. To understand the significance of wellness, it's important to understand how it's linked to health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health is defined as being “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Several key areas of your lifestyle are considered dimensions of overall Wellness. They include: social connectedness, exercise, nutrition, sleep and mindfulness. Each one has an impact on your physical and mental health. By making simple and healthy choices on a daily basis, you will be well on your way towards reducing stress, having positive social interactions and achieving optimal wellness.

Start with small changes within each dimension and take it one day at a time – you don’t have to run a marathon or go on a restrictive diet to implement wellness into your everyday life! 20 minutes of walking, adding more color to your diet, or just getting out of the house to reconnect with an old friend are all great ways to increase your wellness.

Kick-start your mental wellness with an appointment today. Therapy and med-management are available, with Medicare and most commercial insurances accepted. Email admin@caretherapy.net for more information.
