The Missing Man or Fallen Comrade Table may be seen at specific events to honor missing, fallen, or imprisoned service members. Each component of the table is chosen with intention and purpose. While the components of the table and their meaning may vary slightly, many sources generally agree on the following:
- The tablecloth is white symbolizing the purity of motives when answering the call to duty.
- The single red rose reminds us of those who are missing or lost as well as their loved ones.
- A yellow ribbon represents continued hope for those who are missing; a red ribbon represents a country who inspired them.
- The slice of lemon on a bread plate represents the bitter fate of those who have died or those who are missing.
- A pinch of salt on the bread plate symbolizes the tears of those waiting or grieving.
- The inverted glass represents that the service member cannot partake.
- A lighted candle symbolizes either hope for their return or remembering a fallen comrade.
- The empty chair represents their absence.

A Ferguson-Galley acquisition...

Just over a year ago, Ronda & Rob Ferguson, proprietors of the Ferguson Funeral Home in Scottdale purchased the Ralph E. Galley Funeral Home located at 501 Railroad Street in Dawson. Mr. Galley, who just celebrated his 94th birthday decided to retire and sell his business to the Ferguson’s. Ralph’s father, Frank Boyd Galley began the Galley Undertaking establishment in 1921, working out of a renovated garage in Vanderbilt prior to purchasing and restoring a home at the current location in 1931. Ralph joined his father in the family business in 1946 after honorably serving his country in the US Navy during World War II. The father-son business arrangement was short lived when Frank passed away in 1951 and for the next two years Frank’s wife, Ida Woodward Galley operated the firm under a State issued “widows license”. Ralph eventually became the sole proprietor in 1953 and continued serving the residents of Dawson, Vanderbilt, Dickerson Run and surrounding Townships for over the next six decades. The Ferguson’s extend their heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Galley for the confidence place in them and pledge to “Continue the Legacy” of the Galley family in the Tri-Town area.
