Michigan is joining the states considering Medicaid coverage for birth doula services. Yay, right? Not quite yet, as the current proposal has a lot of flaws. 🚩🚩🚩
I'm asking for your help, Michigan friends. If you'd like to see a doula option for Medicaid beneficiaries that provides a living wage for doulas, allows us to continue in our advocacy role, and that supports healthy outcomes for Black and Indigenous doulas and families, PLEASE TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO SUBMIT PUBLIC COMMENT TO THE STATE BY SATURDAY, JUNE 4. And of course share this post to let folks know this is important to you, too.
You can read the state's full proposed policy here:
https://content.govdelivery.com/.../2210-Doula_Medicaid...
And here is the open letter from more than 100 Michigan doulas, outlining our serious concerns:

You can submit your public feedback this week to Janelle Troutman: TroutmanJ1@michigan.gov
If you'd like a quick list of concerns/requests:
• increase doula involvement in drafting the final policy
• dramatically increase the proposed fee for attendance at a birth so that there will be doula uptake and a living wage for doulas
• broaden the list of accepted certifications to include those created and led by Black and Indigenous doulas
• doula services should not require recommendation or referral from a licensed health care professional (explained in detail in the letter)
Thank you, friends! Please help to support Michigan doulas, and we'll in return be here to support you. ❤️ BIG thank you, Jessica English, for putting this together!
