Homemade bone broth is packed with the GOODS - protein, collagen, gelatin, amino acids and essential minerals. It aids in digestion, promotes skin elasticity (hello youthful glow!), reduces inflammation, and is easily absorbable for the body to take all these things in! It is EXTREMELY easy to make (set it and forget it style), way cheaper than store-bought broth, and such a nourishing staple to add to your family’s meals! We use it to make rice and pasta, and add it to sauces and obviously soups… plus the occasional bone broth hot chocolate! 🤪
All you need is a crockpot or instapot. Fill it about 3/4 of the way full with some beef bones from your local butcher OR use leftover carcasses from cooking whole chicken. I like to add store bought chicken feet as well (which looks disgusting🤣 but really adds to the amount of nutrients!). You can also roast these bones in the oven for extra flavor beforehand.
Once you toss the bones into the pot, add about 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar to the bones and let sit for 30 mins. This helps draw out the minerals. Then you can add whatever veggies or seasonings you want for the flavor - I typically add celery, carrots, onion, garlic, thyme, and quality salt (I prefer Redmonds).
Fill your container all the way up with water and turn on the low setting for 24-48 hrs. Once it’s done, strain the liquid and store it…. But DON’T THROW THE BONES AWAY! Get a second batch out of it! Your bones still have plenty of nutrients to give. Simply put the bones and veggies back in, fill with water, and repeat. Might as well get bang for your buck.
For storage, I use silicone soup molds off amazon to have 1.5 or 2 cup portions to grab from the freezer and easily add to our meals. It takes no time at all to melt down. I also fill up a couple half gallon mason jars to put in the fridge for immediate use.
Have you ever made bone broth? Let me know if you try it out, you’ll be surprised how easy it is! Part 2 coming soon with exactly how I store it 🍗🥕🧅🍜
