We sincerely appreciate First Southern State Bank for its strong support and participation in the Alabama Rural Hospital Investment Program.

Their investment represents more than a financial contribution — it reflects a meaningful commitment to the health and well-being of our rural community. Programs like this help ensure that local hospitals have the resources necessary to continue providing high-quality, compassionate care close to home.

When community partners step forward as First Southern State Bank has done, it sends a powerful message: we are stronger when we work together. Supporting rural healthcare means supporting families, strengthening local businesses, and sustaining the long-term vitality of the communities we serve.

We are proud to partner with Northeast Alabama Community College through the nursing apprenticeship program to help grow the next generation of healthcare professionals right here at home.

This partnership creates meaningful opportunities for students to gain hands on experience while building a strong future for healthcare in our community. Investing in local talent and keeping skilled workers close to home is a huge win for our hospital and for the families we serve.

When we work together to support education and workforce development, we strengthen the health of our entire region.

Thank you, Alabama. 💙🏥

Because of the incredible response from individuals and businesses across the state, the $20 million Alabama Rural Hospital Investment Program tax credit cap was fully reached in just one month.

That kind of momentum sends a clear message: Alabamians understand the vital role rural hospitals play in caring for families, supporting local jobs, and sustaining community economies. Your investment is helping ensure these hospitals can continue providing around-the-clock care where it’s needed most.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who stepped up so quickly and so generously. Together, you’ve made a lasting investment in the health and strength of Alabama’s rural communities—now and for the future. Due to inclement weather in our area, Highlands Medical Center outpatient clinics will be closed on Monday, January 26. This decision was made out of an abundance of caution to help ensure the safety of our patients, visitors, and employees.

Did you know?

Approximately 37% of people in the U.S. are eligible to donate blood, yet only about 5% do. January is National Blood Donor Month—an ideal time to help close that gap. LifeSouth welcomes both first-time and returning donors at donor centers and mobile blood drives.

Our Volunteers dedicate countless hours to fundraising efforts within our hospital that benefit both employees and patients. The funds they work so hard to raise are generously reinvested into meaningful gifts for Highlands Medical Center. Their most recent gift was a state-of-the-art $26,000 Algo Pro Newborn Hearing Screener for our Maternity Center

In 2008, Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) became a mandated part of the Alabama Newborn Screening panel of disorders. The goal of this program is to ensure early identification, treatment, and intervention for infants with hearing loss. Hearing screenings are performed at 24–48 hours of age, or before a baby leaves the hospital. The Algo Pro will make this process much easier, as it is a compact device that can be easily transported from room to room, allowing mothers and babies to remain together throughout the screening.

We want to say a sincere THANK YOU to our volunteers whose dedication makes a real difference for our patients and our community.
