Meet our staff:

Joan Terry, LCSW, TF-CBT, CIMHP
Therapist; Director of Clinical Therapy

Joan uses trauma-focused training, narrative therapy, and cognitive processing therapy along with her background in nutrition counseling and integrative mental health knowledge to help her clients move forward from difficult life situations. She has worked with clients ages 12 through 87 years old for over 20 years. Joan specializes in working with teens and young adults, but is also proficient in her knowledge of life changes from middle age through older adulthood.

As the Director of Clinical Services, Joan believes that a trauma-focused clinic, where all employees support each other in their professional and personal goals, creates an environment for our clients that is welcoming and comforting. When you visit Still Water, you will meet Joan's therapy dog, Maya. Maya is a four-year-old, long-haired, German Shepherd who has been working in the office since she was 8 weeks old. Maya believes that her job is to be petted, hugged, and snuggled. She has been a comfort for many of our clients at Still Water.

Intake process;

The strongest predictor of return is not symptom severity or treatment model — it’s the quality of the therapeutic alliance formed in the first 20 minutes. That alliance is shaped by:

Emotional safety — the client feels seen, not judged.

Clear purpose — they understand what therapy will help with.

Early wins — they leave with something helpful right away.

Predictability — they know what happens next and why.

Cultural and spiritual attunement — their identity and worldview are respected without assumptions.

It's national Criminal Justice Day!

It is estimated that 44% of people in jails and 37% of people in prisons have a mental illness, according to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics. By comparison, about 18% of the general U.S. population lives with a mental health condition. These numbers make clear that people with mental illness are overrepresented in the criminal justice system.

Family Dynamics

Family dynamics can often times feel overwhelming and cause us stress, especially around the holidays.

Here are some tips:

Set Clear Boundaries: Identify your limits regarding conversation topics, time spent, and behavior before the event.

Depersonalize: Remember that difficult behavior is often a reflection of others' internal struggles, not a personal attack.

Practice Self-Care: Give yourself permission to take breaks, go for a walk, or leave early if you feel overwhelmed.

Communicate Ahead of Time: Manage expectations by telling family about plans or constraints early.

Focus on Connection, Not Perfection: Look for small moments of joy and connection rather than focusing on total harmony
