Here is another one of Dr. Enders’ patients one week out from a cuff-sparing shoulder replacement. This patient had bad arthritis of the humerus, but relatively well-preserved cartilage on the scapula. He was able to have only a partial shoulder replacement, with the newest hardware which uses a pyrocarbon surface for the head. This is much softer, but just as durable as traditional joint replacements with metal. By doing this, we avoid the #1 reason for revisions of Anatomic shoulder replacements, which is loosening of the plastic piece on the scapula. With the rotator cuff sparing technique, there are numerous advantages. As you can see in this video, he’s not wearing a sling one week out from surgery, his pain is well controlled and less than if we had to violate his rotator cuff, and his motion and function are rapidly returning!
