Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common complications of diabetes and a leading cause of vision loss in adults.
It occurs when high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in the retina, causing them to leak or grow abnormally. Early stages may have no symptoms, but as it progresses, patients can experience blurry vision, dark spots, or even blindness.
Regular dilated eye exams are the only way to catch it early — when treatment is most effective. If you have diabetes, protecting your eyes with routine care is just as important as managing your blood sugar.
