The Course explains why some find pleasure in harmful behaviors and how others associate these choices with pain. This introduction shows how you can change your relationship with your painful habits and shift towards healing.
When we avoid harmful things and find enjoyment in doing so, we call this healing, health, or whole. When we succumb to the vice, it leads to illness or pain. The short-term pleasure when abusing drugs, alcohol, overeating, or eating junk foods is real. So is the pain in consuming the same things by others. Why overeating produces pleasure for some people and no joy for others is answered in The Course (The Emotion-Link and Ultimate Exercise). You can substitute overeating for smoking pot, eating processed foods, excess alcohol, or anything harmful to your health. The secret to healing is looking at those associating pain with toxic things. The beauty of this work is that there is little to no need for more pills or treatments.
The neural pathways of healthy people who love to exercise, eat well or find pleasure in monogamy provide the answers to overcoming your pain or illness. Those loving exercise, easily staying faithful, or eating whole foods do not have superpowers. They don’t have better genetics and are not lucky.
