Wishing everyone a very happy World Down Syndrome Day!
Just wanted to use this opportunity to share some educational information about Down syndrome and how it impacts the lower extremities.
Down syndrome is a genetic condition resulting from an extra chromosome 21, also known as trisomy 21.
Individuals with Down syndrome often exhibit characteristic features, including low muscle tone (hypotonicity). This condition may cause muscle weakness and delays in achieving developmental milestones such as walking and crawling. For many individuals with Down syndrome, early intervention with physical and occupational therapies is crucial to overcoming challenges associated with hypotonicity. Sometimes podiatrists will even prescribe braces or orthotics to help stabilize joints in people with lower extremity weakness and hypotonicity to help facilitate mobility.
Other common features in adults with Down syndrome include flat feet and bunion deformity. While not everyone with flat feet or bunions have pain, in general, it is still essential to wear comfortable, supportive shoes that fit well to avoid blisters and too much pressure from shoes that can ultimately result in pain.
As always, for medical advice be sure to consult your local podiatrist if experiencing pain or have other concerns.
