I suffered from very severe eye pain for several months and called Dr. Cohen. He immediately set up an office visit and prescribed RX to help alleviate the pain. Unfortunately, the eye pain returned several weeks later and I sought out an Ophthalmologist where I received a brief 10-minute office visit and generic RX. I returned to Dr. Cohen for help knowing about his extensive knowledge about dry eyes. He allocated a full hour office visit to determine the cause of my problem and not just treat the symptom. He then provided me with a comprehensive treatment plan (both RX and natural remedies) that I was to follow for two weeks. During that time frame he went on a cruise, but he actually took the time to call me (between ports) just to see how I was doing! In addition, throughout the process Dr. Cohen always took the time to write to answer my questions and check on progress. I’m pleased to say that his treatment plan worked and I’ve made a full recovery.

It is rare to find a doctor that truly cares about the health of his patients and his friendly office staff are equally as caring. Although the office is very busy, they’ve never made me wait in the lobby for my annual eye exam. It’s nice to feel that a doctor’s office is considerate of our time too.

I’ve seen many doctors in my lifetime, but they all pale in comparison to Dr. Cohen. I consider myself fortunate to continue to be his patient and so grateful that he was there to help me through my crisis.
Funny
My daughter Amelie has dyslexia. We knew she had eye issues, but could not get anywhere with other doctors. Dr. Cohen came in with an immediate diagnosis, and treatment plan. We where nervous, she was behind in school, battling low self esteem, and the eye issues where more severe then we thought, but somehow Dr. Cohen made Amelie feel excited about the future, and our family empowered. Within 6 months Amelie's vision recovered. She just won her third grade science fair, and is moving up the ranks in Kung Fu quickly. Mostly though she is happy. When arriving at Dr. Cohens office its hugs all-around, as if she is visiting family. Well, maybe she is. Thanks to Dr. Cohen, the team at Scribbles to Script, and the staff.
Saw Dr. Cohen today. Another amazing appointment. From all of the staff to Dr. Cohen, love them all!
I love Dr Cohen and the entire staff.
Were you at the Jackson Brown concert? “Doctor Eyes” We we’re thinking of you.
Dr Cohen has been caring for my family's vision needs since we moved to the Valley in 2005. He is thorough, patient, and knowledgeable, and has referred us to other specialists as needed. We love the whole staff in his office and highly recommend his team.

Minus One: A story of loss, grieving, acceptance, healing… and finding love again

A highly recommended book written by a patient of mine...
Gregg Bonn, his wife, Heidi, and their children had been longtime patients of mine until Heidi was taken by cancer. Since her passing, whenever Gregg came to my office, we would talk about her, as well as his Facebook postings about his grieving process. Eventually, he realized there was a book to be written, and he recently published the book. Although he is not a writer by training, he certainly could be. His prose and philosophies are outstanding, and his willingness to be vulnerable by sharing his raw emotions is so admirable. While there is tremendous sadness from his loss (and Heidi was a remarkable individual), the book is inspiring and touching and (as the title states..."finding love again") ultimately uplifting. Reading this book will be time well spent. If you are in a book club, this could provide wonderful discussion topics (if your book club is interested, I can contact Gregg to try to arrange for him to attend in-person or virtually).

Minus One: A story of loss, grieving, acceptance, healing… and finding love again Gregg Bonn wasn’t a Facebook user. But when he lost his wife Heidi to cancer, he posted there to let friends know of her passing. And then, to his surprise, he posted again. And again. As Gregg continued to share his daily struggles through grief, his life unexpectedly transformed. He began to he....

FROM THE "I LOVE MY JOB FILE"...
On the left, John came in this morning for his regular annual eye exam, with a gift of a bottle of wine to commemorate what he realized is 30 years of my taking care of his family! I should be giving him a gift, as he, his wife, and two daughters have been a gift to me over these many years!

On the right, Geneva came in for her exam a little while later. Tomorrow she turns 105 years old. When she was born, we were just in the middle of World War 1! In addition to her mastering longevity, she is also one of the nicest people imaginable.

What a treat today has already been!

"THE SHOW MUST GO ON!...."
Valley Youth Theatre has been in existence for over 30 years, and in addition to helping to launch careers of people like Emma Stone (who appeared during last year's on-line event) and Jordin Sparks, it has provided visual arts experiences to children all over the Valley.

Dr. Cohen was recently nominated to join their Board of Directors, and this weekend is their annual fundraiser (on-line). You can link to the event (which starts Saturday morning at 10A and runs till 6P, and it will include many remarkable performances). You can link to the event at www.vyt.com, where you can watch the event, review the on-line silent auction of almost 100 items and bidding has started), or make a donation. If you want to have an entertaining addition to your Saturday and support children in our community, please check out this incredible event!

FROM THE "I LOVE MY JOB" FILE...
Here are three generations of joy! Trish, and her daughter, Kristin, have been my patients for 32 years. I also get to see Trish's granddaughters, Harper (who is almost as old as Kristin was [5 years old] when I first saw her) and her sister, Cora. I ADORE THIS FAMILY AND FEEL SO BLESSED TO HAVE BEEN IN THEIR LIVES FOR SO MANY YEARS!

WELL, THAT DIDN'T GO AS PLANNED...
Particularly for eye doctors, the year 2020 held promise on so many levels (education about, and attention to, eye health, for one thing). If someone wrote a movie script with all that has happened this year, it would never sell, because no one would believe it could be plausible. So, like most everyone else, we hope that the mere change of the page of the calendar tomorrow provides us with reflection for all we have experienced and learned in 2020, and optimism for where are hopefully heading. To all, we wish you a happy and healthy "NOT 2020!"

PROUD PAPA!
My daughter, Arielle, was just presented with an award as the #1 police detective for the entire Pinal County, for her work with victims of crime. It was supposed to be presented at a large banquet/awards ceremony, but that was cancelled, so her Chief of Police presented it to her on behalf of the County. Arielle was also the first "rookie" to get the City of Maricopa Police Department "Officer of the Year" award several years ago. She is amazing (and I'm certainly NOT biased! 😉).

Please join us in congratulating Det. Cohen for receiving the Pinal County Award for Outstanding Service to Victims of Crime proudly presented by Chief Stahl on behalf of Pinal County this morning.

FROM THE "I LOVE MY JOB" FILE...
Any chance I have had to see (and then post about) Lindanne is a positive one. She was literally my very FIRST patient in private practice back in 1985, and has continued to be my patient ever since. While any rumors of my plans to retire would be untrue, I did ask Lindanne to be ready for a call (if and when I set a retirement date sometime [long] down the road) asking her to schedule an appointment for that day. Wouldn't it be great if she could be my very first AND very last patient in practice?

GRATITUDE!
In a year filled with so many obvious challenges, this holiday weekend, we choose to focus (no "eye" pun intended) on one word: "gratitude." We are grateful for our families (home and office), for our wonderful and loyal patients, for our friends, for our health, and for the many things, simple and large, for which we can be thankful. We hope that everyone reading this will pause and count their blessings and feel hopeful about the days that come.

Any of you who have followed my posts over the years know that I have a very special affection for the young lady I've called "Dr. Ivory" ever since she helped me examine her mother's eyes many years ago. She has been my patient since she was 2, and now she's in high school! Her real smile is even more dynamic than the one on her mask.

RELIEF!!!
For countless weeks, the temperature outside has been 90 or 91 degrees when I've been driving to work every day at 7 AM. This was this morning! It felt like the oven door was closed and I could feel the AC! Now we head into the time of year that reminds us why we live here in the "Valley of the Sun!"

"FOGGING" IN ARIZONA?!?!? WHO'DA THUNK?

With the use of masks, people who wear glasses are having a new and frustrating challenge here in the desert...our glasses fogging up. We now have a product called "Fog Away" THAT WORKS. It just arrived in our office and the results have been impressive. You can come to our office to get a bottle (same price as on Amazon) so you can stop misting up!

WARNING!!!!

Many of you may remember the "bucket challenge" for ALS research several years ago. There is a new "challenge" out there that is far less noble and far more dangerous. On Tic Toc, there is a challenge called "bright eye challenge," where the claim is that if you put bleach into your eye, you can change your eye color.

Very simply...DON'T DO IT, and talk with your children about the dangers of such an irresponsible activity. Bleach with cause a painful chemical burn to the sensitive surface of your eye, and can cause permanent damage. It will NOT change eye color (unless you think making your eyes incredibly red from irritation constitutes an eye color change).

While we see emergency patients during the work week the same day, and we have a telemedicine platform for patients who cannot come in, and we also are on call after hours for eye emergencies, WE DO NOT WANT TO SEE ANYONE FOR THIS PROBLEM.

Please take care, and if you can, PLEASE RE-POST THIS MESSAGE to help prevent a potential disaster for someone you know!

"WEIRD WEDNESDAY (being reported the next day)"

...AND something COMPLETELY different during times that are...completely different...

These must be sports firsts:

Two baseball teams, The NY Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles, EACH had their games postponed and STILL played.

The Orioles are the first team to ever have a game postponed and STILL managed to lose (a recurring theme for them over these past many years).

And, what must be a first for a sports announcer, one was heard to say that a batter hit a 2-run homerun LEADING OFF an inning (meaning the first batter up at the beginning of a new inning).

Briefly, here are the facts behinds these weird events...The Orioles were supposed to play the Florida Marlins and the Yankees were supposed to play the Philadelphia Phillies. Due to COVID-19, those games were cancelled, so they changed the schedule so the Orioles and Yankees played each other, instead. For the homerun announcement, to shorten the length of games, baseball adopted a new rule this year where if a game goes into "extra innings," the batting team STARTS the inning with a runner on second base. Therefore, if the first batter at the plate hits a homerun, it is a "2-run homer" even though he is the first batter up for the inning.

Welcome to sports in 2020!!
