Have you ever been told to “just breathe” or “take deep breaths” when you are anxious or overwhelmed? Sometimes that’s easier said than done. I learned about four corner breathing from a client many years ago and I just love it. It’s simple and easy to remember. When you are feeling stressed, just shift your focus to one corner of the room and breathe in as you count to four and out for four. Repeat this for each of the four corners in the room. All you have to remember is the number four! It will help to ground you in your space as well as slow your breathing and calm your nervous system. Give it a try and see if it helps!

Utilizing our 5 senses is incredibly grounding. When we find ourselves worried or nervous we are likely being pulled into the unknown of the future. When we are down or sad we are often focused on the past. This mental tug-of-war can be difficult and challenging to deal with and we have the most power and control in the present moment. It’s a question we rarely ask ourselves. It’s so easy to get caught up in our anxiety, worries, fears, and the worst case scenario. Next time you start to feel a little anxious about the future, ask yourself “what if it all works out?” Maybe you will feel just a little bit of that weight lift so some hope can creep in ☺️

We are trained from a young age to be kind to others, but we have such a hard time being kind to ourselves. Our culture has taught us that being self-critical will “push” us to be better. The reality is, it doesn’t usually work and we are left feeling pretty badly about ourselves. Here’s a simple trick to help when those pesky negative thoughts creep in…imagine exactly what you would say to a friend, and then offer that same message to yourself. We deserve the same empathy, kindness, and compassion as we give to others. You might be surprised that you feel that same “push” to do better when your feelings are validated and held with compassion. Give it a try and see how it feels ☺️

Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started. If you’re feeling stuck, unmotivated, depressed, or in a pattern of procrastination the 5 minute rule might help. Pick a small, meaningful task and commit to doing it for just 5 minutes. If you’re not feeling it after 5 minutes you have permission to stop. Chances are, once you get started you just might feel a little better and want to keep going. I challenge you to give it a try this week and let me know if it helps.
