Sometimes people think home-based physical therapy means lower level or for less serious conditions. Here's some of the most common orthopedic concerns we treat each week!

Don't let yourself down in recovery!

Avoid these three mistakes that we see patients make often before we see them:

1) Feeling that post-anesthesia and post-surgery adrenaline and moving your body TOO much immediately. Your body may not recognize pain right away after surgery if you've had a nerve block or still feeling the effects of anesthesia. Don't take this as a sign to get moving too quickly early on. REST is necessary, more than you think!

2) Sitting with your leg in a dependent position. If you're sitting or laying, elevate! Early swelling can make mobility and pain management difficult in the acute post-surgical phase.

3) Not preparing their house/everyday use items for post-surgical recovery. Toilet seats, higher beds/mattresses, and favorite chairs can all require some adjusting. This is one area we start addressing from the minute we walk in. Our goal is making you feel comfortable in your home right from the start!

Meet Anika, one of our awesome pediatric physical therapists! ⛹🏼‍♀️

Anika works with children with congenital and neurological conditions, as well as orthopedic injuries and other developmental concerns. She has worked extensively with kids and teens suffering from chronic pain, helping them shift their mindset from focusing on pain levels to functional improvements in order to enhance exercise tolerance.

We don't believe in stressing parents out about their baby's "perfect" development, but we do want every parent to know when to reach out for help. If your infant is exhbiting any of these signs, reach out to a professional for evaluation. Any of these signs could indicate a need for physical therapy.

Don't underestimate the power of a few focused breaths!

I'm 3 months postpartum and still using diaphragmatic breathing daily before I get into my lifts/strength work. Helps me connect to that stable & strong core feeling that still feels functional & free.

Try this one at home: one hand above the belly button and one hand below. Think about expanding your ribs sideways and filling your belly with air as you inhale, allowing the pelvic floor to relax. As you exhale, hands should come toward each other as you draw your hip points together and belly button/ribs down. Practice daily before workouts to get your body (and mind!) prepped for action!

Many times you'll be up and walking before you leave the hospital, but the foundation matters! Practicing weight shifts to either side builds symmetry with your future steps and ensures you don't develop any unwanted compensations.
