⬆️ EARLY detection is key with managing scoliosis. ⬆️ before a child enters their big growth sport, they should be screened for scoliosis. Screening can take less than 2 minutes, but it can greatly impact care.

Everyone, meet Ashley!

We are excited to welcome our newest therapist, Dr. Ashley Sapien to the Scottsdale Scoliosis team! 🎉

Ashley grew up in the Seattle area, moved to Montana to get her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science, and recieved her Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from Midwestern University right here in Glendale, AZ 🏜 She completed her BSPTS C1 Schroth certification this year, and she is excited to bring her extensive experience working with pediatric patients into the scoliosis arena.

In her free time, Ashley enjoys spending time with her husband and her daughter.

*WCR Braces*

Another clinic in the books! Thank you to everyone who came out and participated, and thank you to Stephanie from once again for your time and expertise 🧠

With the high volume of adults at the clinic this weekend, we are working on developing a protocol to evaluate adults for scoliosis braces and determine appropriateness for bracing and predict outcomes 🤓

Adults in the future likely will not have to wait for Stephanie to fly in for their evaluations and scans when our protocol is finalized!

What Are Thoooose!? 👟

Those are the oldest shoes on earth 😲 And if you have worked with me before, we have probably talked about your foot function and how it could relate to scoliosis. If you ask me, these 10,000 year old shoes are better than 99% of what I see walk through my doors!

Your feet are the interface between you and the world, the base upon which you stand, the structure that dictates how well all others above it can operate. Can foot form or function contribute to the development of scoliosis? Or exacerbate it? Or better yet, be implicated in the treatment of scoliosis?

Unfortunately, the scientific world has more questions than answers right now.

This collection is housed in the Museum of Natural and Cultural History on the University of Oregon campus, just in case you want to pop in and witness the pinnacle of footwear craftsmanship.

*Scoliosis Is Rotation*

This is one of my favorite demonstrations to illustrate how rotation can lead the the "C curve" or "S curve" we see on an x-ray.

All you do is get a shirt or a towel and twist it up. When you rotate far enough, you might see your towel take on a shape that looks something like your scoliosis curve.

All 3 dimensions, ESPECIALLY ROTATION, should be accounted for in your exercise program and your brace.

*Schroth and Bracing 🫂*

You might be wondering how your Schroth exercises and your brace coincide. They are trying to teach you exactly the same thing! 🤯

In photo 1, we can see the ribcage prominence protruding back and to the right, the right scapula protracted, and the left hip elevated. These features are exacerbated in left stance phase of gait. 🚶🏽‍♀️

Swipe to photo 2, we see the patient walking with her dynamic posture corrections in place and a visual of the brace exerting *all the same* forces on her body in her static standing posture.

Research indicates that implementing a best practice program of Schroth exercises and a Rigo-Cheneau style brace has an 88% success rate for stopping curve progression🥇
