A child’s skeletal & muscular systems are rapidly growing. Selecting & properly using a backpack can minimize potential injury, discomfort & poor posture.
HOW TO CHOOSE A BACKPACK
•Wide, padded shoulder straps
•Padding on the pack that rests on the back
•Lightweight, but sturdy material
•Chest & waist straps
•Multiple compartments
•Reflective option for additional safety
HOW TO WEAR A BACKPACK
•Adjust shoulder strap length, backpack to rest in the middle of the back
•Bottom of pack should fall 2” above the waist, never sit more than 4” below the waist
•Pack should fit close to the body
•Wear by using both shoulder straps
•Do not exceed 10-15% of body weight
•Use chest & waist straps to distribute weight
•Clean out the pack on a regular basis
RED FLAGS TO LOOK FOR
•Complaints of numbness or tingling in the arms, back or legs
•Muscle strain injuries & pain
•Headaches
•Child leaning forward either by pushing the neck & head forward or full chest to balance the weight of the pack
