Gentle reminder: we don’t need to shut down in order to slow down.

A common experience for many of my clients is feeling an urgency to rest, but then feeling incredibly uncomfortable once they are there.

Often times, when resting, they come into stillness (laying down, sitting down, trying to shut off) and they find that there is a sense of alarm in their system once they head there.

What many often don’t realize is that when we have a system that is used to being in “go” mode, shutting “off” feels life threatening.

So I like to remind clients, resting is t about turning off, it’s about turning in.

Turning our brain and thoughts off isn’t realistic, forcing our body into stillness isn’t always the best thing for us. Instead, how might we be able to change the direction of our attention from our mind to our body? From our thoughts to our environment? From our workload to our hunger cues?

How might we be able to slow down the pace at which we do certain things so that we drop into what it is we are actually doing?

How might we be able to take breaks from the thought spirals and the self criticism and the future tripping even for 5 minutes and focus our attention to the clouds above us, or the warm cup of tea we are sipping or the music that’s playing in the background.

Resting is less about shutting down and more about slowing down so we can come out of urgency and into the here and now ❤️

How will you practice resting this week? 👇🏼
