In the 30 years since a deadly train and school bus crash claimed the lives of seven children and injured many more, the Illinois fire department adjacent to the crash scene has held an annual blood drive, turning heartbreak into hope for others. In the 1995 crash, first responders took 32 passengers to seven area hospitals.

“It’s emotional. It gets to you, and I think it’s something that will affect a lot of us for the rest of our lives,” said Fire Chief Robert Kreher. “It’s a reminder that any day, something like this can happen. People need help. Those students needed blood at the hospital. You never know when someone will need it.”

The department’s dedication embodies what it means to be a Blood Drive Coordinator, turning compassion into action and ensuring help is always ready when tragedy strikes. Thank you, Fox River Grove Fire Department, for supporting blood donation. 🩸❤️

Vitalant Arizona was proud to join Blood Cancer United for Light The Night on Saturday evening. Everyone with blood cancer deserves a longer, better life. At Light The Night we gathered as a community to celebrate, honor, and remember those touched by blood cancers.

Platelet donations are vital for many cancer patients. Chemotherapy can destroy platelets, the blood components that help stop bleeding. These donations are made through a special automated process at Valley Vitalant donation centers.

Robin is closing in on her 500th donation! 🎉

We asked what inspired her to start donating platelets.

“I had a family member who relied on platelets during leukemia treatment—and I’ve just kept donating ever since,” Robin said.

Her dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Vitalant staff say Robin’s friendly and upbeat spirit lights up the center every time she walks in.

“She’s one of our ‘frequent flyers’! We all recognize her when she comes in. It’s like seeing an old friend!”

Robin aims to donate every three weeks, making a lasting impact for patients who need platelets to survive and heal.

From Surviving to Saving Lives 💙

In January 2025, Jenn's life changed overnight. What began as hip pain turned out to be large ovarian masses.

During a second surgery, she required nearly nine units of blood.

“Without someone’s donation, there would have been no blood to give me,” she said.

Her recovery was long, but her gratitude inspired action. As a nurse and long-time donor, Jenn began organizing blood drives, bringing co-workers and first-time donors together to give back.

Now, she’s planning her next drive.

“This small act of kindness can have a huge impact,” she said. “I’m living proof that it matters.”
