Today we recognize National Grief Awareness Day and hear from Cornerstone Licensed Therapist, Frank Hernandez.

Frank highlights six practical coping skills for anyone experiencing grief. It’s important to acknowledge the pain of loss, whether it comes from the death of a loved one, a breakup/divorce, health issues, or anything we value in life. Here are six tips for handling grief in a healthy and balanced way:

1. Allow yourself to feel: research shows that suppressing emotions only causes the pain to last longer.
2. Don’t grieve alone: community and support can make a huge difference in how we process pain.
3. Take care of your body: be sure to eat, sleep, hydrate, and move your body, even if it’s just some gentle stretching.
4. Give yourself time: remember there’s no deadline for healing, take as much time as you need.
5. Engage in activities that help you heal: journaling, meditation, or dedicated time for quiet reflection.
6. Ask for help: remember you’re not alone, support from both loved ones and professionals is always helpful during these times.

Most importantly, remember to be kind to yourself during this process. Grieving isn’t always linear, so setbacks, hard days, and even hard moments are all normal.

If you feel like you need a higher level of care during your grieving process, head over to CornerstoneHealingCenter.com to review our Virtual IOP program, and other forms of treatment to help you in your grieving process.

💬 ”What would you tell someone who’s struggling with the concept of getting sober?”

On last week's episode of Struggle & Strive, Dru Meskan shares, “I would tell them to hop in on this thing for a year solid, and do the things the men around them tell them to do, (if they're a man), and if they're a woman, do all the things the women who know what they're doing tell you to do. Hit the ground hard. Hit it running.”

Recovery isn’t about going back. It’s about moving forward with purpose, faith, and community. At Cornerstone, we value the hard work it takes to make a lasting change, but you don’t have to do it alone.
