Optimal Heart Center and Body Lab

Optimal Heart Center and Body Lab The Optimal Heart Center & Body Lab is Arizona’s only concierge cardiology practice. We’re changing everything about the way we look at the heart.

Traditional cardiac evaluations rely on cholesterol and stress tests as markers in detecting cardiac disease. Misconceptions about heart disease and stroke are that cholesterol causes heart attacks, stress tests determine cardiac disease, and that mild to moderate vessel blockages are no big deal. And, because of insurance issues, physicians throughout the country are often prevented from offering

laboratory studies, cardiovascular tests, and substantive time, to help them identify and eradicate strokes and heart attacks. No amount of disease in any artery is ever normal. Dr. Feyrer-Melk uses advanced inflammatory, lipid, genetic, saliva and other testing to comprehensively evaluate heart health and identify and treat cardiac risks before they emerge. Our concierge practice is significant to people who want to know if they are living with heart risks, or those who need to know how best to treat the risks they are living with. ABOUT DR FEYRER-MELK

From Cleveland Wellness Clinic:
Picking the Right Proteins for Your Health.

“Where’s the beef?” To up your odds of living a long, healthy life, make sure it (that includes bacon!) doesn’t appear on your plate more than once a week. According to a 16-year observational study of more than a half-million adults, consuming beef, lamb, and pork substantially and importantly up your odds of dying from eight — yes, eight — conditions: cancer, heart disease, respiratory diseases, diabetes, stroke, kidney disease, and liver disease. That’s quite a litany! Both processed meats (such as bacon - we know, we repeat ourselves - and lunch meat) and unprocessed meat (such as steak or ground meat) were associated with increased health risks in the study. “White meat,” however, such as chicken and turkey, was linked to health benefits. That said, when it comes to protein, don’t put all your eggs in one basket (so to speak!). Vary your sources, and be sure to include plenty of plant proteins like lentils, beans, tempeh, and nuts as well as fish such as salmon and ocean trout, which contain not just protein but also beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. To break out of the red-meat habit, embrace planning: Meatless Monday, Turkey (or Tempeh) Taco (corn only) Tuesday, White Bean Soup Wednesday…. you get the idea.

When eating a meal, eat the protein source first, especially before consuming starches. Protein can decrease the production of the hunger hormone (ghrelin), and in turn increase the levels of a gut hormone (Peptide YY), which makes you feel full and satisfied.

Eating protein first may also help keep your blood sugar and insulin from rising too high after a meal.

In a 2015 study, people with type 2 diabetes were served identical meals on different days. Blood sugar and insulin rose significantly less when they consumed protein and vegetables before eating high carb foods, compared with when the order was reversed. Bottom line, food order matters!

Tea May Be Hot Stuff…for Your Health!

If you had to describe coffee’s personality, words like “bold” and “brash” might come to mind. Tea, on the other hand? Subtle, gentle, perhaps bookish. But as with people, calm doesn’t mean ineffective. A study shows that, for women but not men (sorry, guys), drinking tea can lead to epigenetic changes. What kind of changes? Epigenetic changes are chemical modifications that turn our genes on or off. Environmental factors and daily habits can lead to such changes. When it comes to drinking tea, research suggests a connection between tea consumption by women and epigenetic changes in genes that are known to interact with cancer and estrogen metabolism. More research is needed to understand the implications, but other studies have linked both green and black tea to a range of health benefits in men as well as in women. Tea contains compounds called polyphenols, which may help to protect against some types of cancer, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses. Keep in mind that tea can interfere with the absorption of iron, so it may be best to drink it between meals. And don’t count on tea to compensate for harmful habits. (In a nutshell: eat a nutritious diet, get regular exercise and enough sleep, limit your alcohol consumption, and don’t smoke!) But if you like to drink tea, enjoy it knowing that it’s pretty hot stuff – for your health!
