What is a goiter?

A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland. Your thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland which sits at the base of the neck.
The main causes of a goiter are auto-immune thyroid disease (thyroiditis), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, pregnancy, iodine deficiency, drug induced thyroid disease and family history of goiter.

Many patients are told that the only treatment for Hashimoto’s disease is with thyroid hormone replacement. This will potentially work if in fact the thyroid hormones are depleted and need replacement but there are other ways to treat this autoimmune condition.
