Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition where an excess number of tissue degrading enzymes, called proteases, are at work breaking down cartilage and other joint tissues. The A2M molecule binds to these proteases and prevents their continued destruction. The result is a clean joint with no proteases where the pain and inflammation associated with deterioration are gone. The joint and tissues are then able to engage in repair processes that result in successful outcomes.
