Medscape recently published new research suggesting that ginger may help ease nausea in people taking GLP-1 medications.

In a small randomized, placebo-controlled pilot study, participants who used a chewable ginger supplement reported slightly greater relief of nausea than those who received a placebo. While the main nausea severity outcome was not statistically significant, the ginger group had significantly more reports of reduced nausea overall and of mild-to-moderate symptom improvement. No drug-related adverse events were reported.

For patients taking GLP-1 medications, nausea can be one of the most frustrating side effects. Conservative dosing, slow dose increases, smaller meals, eating slowly, and limiting high-fat or spicy foods may still be the first place to start, but ginger may be a simple over-the-counter option worth discussing with your healthcare provider.

New advancements in diabetes care are creating new possibilities! Recent research, by Novo Nordisk, on oral semaglutide shows promising results in helping lower blood sugar in children and teens with type 2 diabetes, marking a meaningful step forward in treatment options.

There is exciting research happening in the world of type 1 diabetes. A recent investigator-initiated trial at The University of Chicago Medicine looked at pancreatic islet cell transplantation paired with a targeted immunosuppressive medication designed to help prevent rejection without some of the toxic side effects associated with traditional immunosuppressive therapies.

In the trial, 10 patients who were more than four weeks post-transplant achieved insulin independence, with no reported rejection episodes and no development of new donor-specific HLA antibodies. While this is still early research and not yet a widely available treatment, it represents a hopeful step toward what researchers are calling a potential functional cure for type 1 diabetes.

For people living with diabetes, progress like this matters. It reminds us of the importance of continued research, specialized care, and individualized treatment conversations for the future of endocrine health.
