Let our family serve your family. Sincerely,

Paul and Cora Messinger

SCOTTSDALE HISTORY by Paul Messinger
Canal Skiing was a 1940s Art Form for Desert Dudes

In the 1940s, water skiing on Scottsdale’s section of the Arizona Canal was the buzz. Every teenage boy had his own idea of how best to ski the canal.

We built our ski boards out of plywood, sawing grooves on the top of the wood so we could bend the tip upward, just like a modern-day water ski. Then, we drilled holes in the board so a towrope could be tied to the board and then tied to a post on the back of a pickup truck.

SCOTTSDALE HISTORY by Paul Messinger
🏈 When Scottsdale High School was our only high school, and it had fewer than 100 students, we played what was known as six-man football. It made for a great game that was exciting to watch.🏈

The scores were more like those you would expect to see in basketball. Why? Because in six-man football, everyone except the center was an eligible pass receiver.

When Scottsdale High School was our only high school, and it had fewer than 100 students, we played ...

SCOTTSDALE HISTORY by Paul Messinger

🗞️ 🗞️ In the fall of 1948, my friend Albert Owens and I were hired by The Arizona Republic to drive two auto routes. We hauled newspapers to the young men who delivered them on bicycle. Our shifts began after midnight and lasted until 6 a.m.

This particular night, things didn't work out quite as planned.

SCOTTSDALE HISTORY by Paul Messinger
🌧️ In June 1943, we had a very hard rain. It started during the night and came in pounding waves. There would be 10 or 15 minutes of driving rain, followed by gentle showers. Then the rain would start coming down hard again. 🌧️

This went on for several hours, beginning around 3 a.m. and lasting past 7 a.m. The ground eventually became waterlogged, and all of the low areas filled with runoff from the storm. It was the biggest rain I had ever seen.
