Thank You, Arizona Cardinals & A New Leaf!

This weekend, ASCF joined the Arizona Cardinals and A New Leaf for its Crucial Catch Wellness Day in Mesa!

From skin checks and face painting with sunscreen to mammograms, haircuts, flu shots, and even pet care, the event offered essential health services and a lot of smiles.

We loved meeting so many community members and sharing the importance of sun safety and early detection. Big thanks to the Cardinals players, cheerleaders, and Big Red for making the day extra special! 🏈💛

Sun safety isn't just for your skin!

While many of us think about protecting our skin from the sun, did you know that your eyes and eyelids can also get sun damaged?

UV rays can cause eye diseases and skin cancers on the eyelids.
😎 What’s the solution?

Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays and a wide-brimmed hat!

Protect your eyes like you protect your skin! 😎

A big thank you to Sunshine Acres Children's Home () and the amazing volunteers from our Medical Student Coalition for making our Sun Safety Face Activity on Saturday, September 27 such a success! 💛

The kids had just as much fun painting each other (and our team!) as they did getting painted, and all while learning about the importance of sun protection. 🎨🧴

We’re grateful for the joy, energy, and teamwork that made this event so special. Together, we’re helping the next generation build healthy, sun-safe habits. 🌟

Maria() never gave much thought to sun protection when she was younger. Growing up in Arizona, even people with Hispanic heritage like her used mineral oil to deepen their tans, not sunscreen to protect their skin. At the time, there weren't any concerns about skin cancer.

Years later, after giving birth, her husband noticed a dark spot on her skin. She assumed it was one of the many changes that came with pregnancy, but when the spot didn’t go away, she had it checked. The diagnosis was difficult to hear; malignant melanoma.

Fortunately, the melanoma was caught early, and Maria’s treatment was successful. Several years later, Maria was diagnosed with breast cancer, which was also caught early. She now schedules regular skin checks and breast screenings. Her experience demonstrates the vital importance of early detection.

Stay sun safe in the car. ☀️🪟

Did you know? While car windshield glass blocks most UVB and UVA radiation, side window glass lets a lot of UVA rays through. Both types of UV rays cause skin aging and skin cancer.

🚘 Car side, back, and sunroof windows usually don’t protect you.
✈️ Airplane, train, and bus windows also let UVA rays pass through.
🏡 Even at home, sunlight through windows can affect your skin.

Protect yourself and your family by staying sun safe in the car!

Hispanic Heritage Month Reminder 🌟

Melanoma rates among Hispanics have risen nearly 20% in the last two decades, and diagnoses often happen at later, more dangerous stages.

Remember to:
✅ Wear SPF 30+ daily
✅ Seek shade between 10 AM – 4 PM
✅ Check your skin regularly

This month let’s celebrate heritage and protect our health.

Play Sun Smart, Play in the Shade!

Did you know the sun’s UV rays are strongest between 10am and 4pm? One of the best ways to protect your skin (and your kids’!) is to make the shade your playground.

🌳 Find a tree or shade and turn it into your playground
⛱️ Pack an umbrella for the park or beach
🧴 Don’t forget broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen!

Remember: shade doesn’t block all UV rays, so pair it with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses for the ultimate skin protection. 💛

September in Arizona = still summer for your skin.

Even as the temps start to dip, UV levels stay high, which means sun damage (and skin cancer risk) is still a big concern.

The Arizona sun doesn’t take a break in September, and neither should your protection. 💛

This is a reminder for us all that skin cancer can affect anyone, at any age, and with any skin tone.

Protect yourself by:
✅ Wearing SPF 30+ daily (yes, even when it’s cloudy!)
✅ Reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours outdoors
✅ Wearing hats & UPF clothing
✅ Scheduling regular skin checks
