In 40 days, she ran 2,190 miles through mountains, forests, and storms. She averaged 54 miles a day. She slept 90 minutes a night. She became the first woman—and fastest human ever—to conquer the Appalachian Trail.
August 8, 2024. Maine.
Tara Dower stood at the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail on Mount Katahdin, staring down a challenge that had broken countless athletes before her.
2,190 miles. Fourteen states. 464,500 feet of elevation gain—the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest sixteen times.
The current record: 41 days, 7 hours, 39 minutes. Set in 2018 by Karel Sabbe, a Belgian dentist and ultrarunner.
Tara's goal: break it. Become not just the fastest woman, but the fastest human ever to complete the Appalachian Trail.
She was 37 years old, a mother, an ultrarunner from Meadows of Dan, Virginia. And she was about to attempt something most people consider impossible.
The Appalachian Trail isn't a jog through the woods. It's relentless—rocky climbs, root-choked descents, river crossings, weather that shifts from scorching heat to freezing rain within hours.
To break the record, Tara would need to average over 50 miles per day for six weeks straight. Not on flat ground—through mountains. Not well-rested—on 90 minutes of sleep per night.
This was her second attempt. In 2023, she'd tried and failed, forced to quit after injury and exhaustion.
But Tara Dower doesn't quit twice.
At 6:00 AM on August 8, she started running south from Maine.
The strategy was brutal: run or hike for 21-23 hours per day, sleep for 60-90 minutes, wake up, and do it again. For forty days straight.
She had a support crew driving ahead to meet her at road crossings with food, fresh shoes, medical supplies. But between those checkpoints, Tara was alone with the trail, the mountains, and her own mind.
The first week, adrenaline carried her. The second week, reality set in.
Her feet blistered, then the blisters burst, then new blisters formed on the raw flesh beneath. She taped them and kept running.
Her body screamed for rest. She slept on the ground at trail intersections, ninety-minute power naps before her crew woke her to continue.
The physical pain was constant—muscles burning, joints aching, stomach rebelling against the thousands of calories she forced down to keep moving.
But the mental challenge was worse.
Hour after hour, alone on the trail, fighting the voice that said: "Stop. You can't do this. It's too much."
She kept running.
Through New Hampshire's White Mountains—notoriously brutal terrain. Through Vermont's mud and roots. Through the heat and humidity of Virginia and Tennessee.
Fifty-four miles. Every single day. For weeks.
To put that in perspective: a marathon is 26.2 miles. Tara was running more than two marathons every day, through mountains, on almost no sleep, for six weeks.
Her crew watched her deteriorate—weight dropping, exhaustion carving into her face, her gait becoming more labored with each passing day.
But her pace never slowed. If anything, she got faster.
By late August, she'd passed through Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee. By early September, she was in Georgia, approaching the southern terminus.
And she was ahead of the record pace.
News spread through the ultrarunning community: Tara Dower was going to do it. She was going to break the overall record.
Not the women's record—the overall record. The fastest any human had ever completed the Appalachian Trail.
On September 18, 2024, after 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes, Tara Dower reached Springer Mountain in Georgia.
She had averaged 54 miles per day. She had climbed nearly half a million feet. She had slept an average of 90 minutes per night for six weeks.
And she had broken the fastest known time by nearly thirteen hours.
Tara Dower became the first woman ever to hold the overall FKT on the Appalachian Trail—not just the women's record, but the fastest time period, male or female.
When she finished, she could barely stand. Her feet were destroyed, her body pushed beyond what most humans can endure.
But she had done what she set out to do.
The ultrarunning world erupted. This wasn't just breaking a record—this was rewriting what people thought was possible.
The previous record holder, Karel Sabbe, congratulated her publicly. So did Jennifer Pharr Davis, who had held the women's record at 46 days, 11 hours since 2011.
Major outdoor publications covered the achievement. Tara Dower had just accomplished one of the most impressive feats in endurance sports history.
But here's what makes Tara's story even more remarkable: she isn't a professional athlete backed by major sponsors. She's a trail runner from rural Virginia who works as a nurse.
She didn't grow up dreaming of records. She found ultrarunning later in life and discovered she had an extraordinary gift for suffering efficiently—the ability to push through pain that would stop most people.
She'd failed the previous year. Injury and exhaustion had forced her to quit. She could have accepted that the record was beyond her reach.
Instead, she came back stronger, smarter, more determined.
And she succeeded.
Tara Dower's FKT represents more than athletic achievement. It represents what's possible when you refuse to accept limitations.
The Appalachian Trail has humbled thousands of experienced hikers attempting to complete it in five or six months. Tara did it in forty days while running.
She proved that women don't just compete with men in ultra-endurance—they can beat them outright when given the same opportunities to push limits.
She proved that failure isn't final. That coming back after defeat, learning from mistakes, and trying again can lead to the impossible becoming reality.
And she proved that ordinary people—nurses, mothers, people from small towns—can achieve extraordinary things when they're willing to suffer for them.
Today, Tara Dower holds the overall fastest known time on the Appalachian Trail. Her name is at the top of the record books, above every male and female athlete who's ever attempted it.
She ran 2,190 miles in 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes.
She averaged 54 miles per day through some of the most challenging terrain in America.
She slept ninety minutes a night and kept running.
And she became the fastest human ever to complete the Appalachian Trail.
Not the fastest woman. The fastest human.
