June is for survivors! 💗💪🏼

This month we celebrate National Cancer Survivors Month. This is a time when our nation celebrates an important milestone in a person’s cancer experience.

We observe this month to celebrate life and encourage those still battling cancer, as well as their families, that survivorship is possible.

What does “survivor” mean to you? Being a cancer survivor and your survivorship can be interpreted in many ways. Was it the day that you finished treatment? Was it the day your tumor was removed?

Being a cancer survivor is something to be proud of, and every moment of every day within National Cancer Survivors Month (and every day for that matter) shows how triumphant we are!

As we head into breast cancer awareness month, now is a great time to schedule your annual 3D mammogram. Early detection of breast cancer is the key to positive treatment outcomes! 💕

At Arizona Breastnet, your breast health and peace of mind, is of the utmost importance to us.

Please be assured that during this pandemic, we will continue to take all necessary precautionary measures to keep our patients and staff healthy.

We continue to use CDC recommended disinfecting techniques to clean the office and the equipment. We continue to practice physical distancing in our waiting rooms. Upon making your appointment, a series of screening questions will be asked of you, regarding possible symptoms and/or any sick contacts. These questions will again be asked at the time that you come to your appointment. Your temperature will also be taken. We ask that you please wear a mask to your appointment.

We have taken time to assess our continued course of action during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current national events are unlike anything we have ever experienced. However, our commitment remains the same, and in line with Governor Ducey’s executive order, we will remain open as an “Essential Service” for women to get their mammograms, ultrasounds and biopsies.

Our staff is taking all necessary precautions, to keep patients distanced and safe. We continue to disinfect surfaces and equipment often and between each patient, as we’ve always done.

For many years I have been searching for a medical colleague who is passionate about the Breastnet concept of patient care, is an excellent breast imaging radiologist, and is willing to guide Breastnet into the future maintaining our unprecedented level of service to you as patients.

I am delighted to introduce Eszter Wolf, M.D. She will be taking over as owner and Medical Director of Arizona Breastnet effective March 7. I am confident you will be in excellent hands with Dr. Wolf and our expert staff. Dr. Wolf is a fellowship trained breast imaging radiologist who grew up in Phoenix and trained at the University of Arizona Medical School. She is well-known and respected by local physicians and breast surgeons as she has been working in our community for several years.

She has already invested in the latest 3-D Hologic mammographic equipment. I am delighted to tell you our first 3-D mammogram was performed last week and the long wait was well worth it! My reluctance to adopt 3-D over 2-D mammography was due to the increased radiation dose. I also did not feel the then existing 3-D found any more breast cancers than 2-D. I am thrilled to tell you the physicist confirmed last week our long awaited 3-D software with 2-D image reconstruction delivers less radiation dose to patients then the 2-D mammogram alone.

Dr. Wolf intends to deliver screening and diagnostic mammography and screening whole breast ultrasound with same-day personal consultations and results as we have done over the last 20 years. She will also be performing stereotactic core biopsies of the breast and ultrasound guided biopsies the same day if there are no medical contraindications. Our excellent patient care makes Breastnet unique in Arizona, rare nationally and even internationally.

I am excited to be able to spend more time developing cryotherapy for breast cancers which can be performed as outpatient procedures with local anesthetic precluding the need for surgery and usually radiation and chemotherapy. I am continuing to develop screening whole breast ultrasound which we introduced to Arizona in 2007. This is slowly becoming accepted as an effective breast screening tool for women with dense breast tissue.

I would like to thank you for your overwhelming support, patience, prayers and warm wishes during my medical absences last year. I am extremely grateful to be back in good health once again. I am looking forward to more time with my family and grandchildren. My continuing commitment towards better breast health for women is not over and will keep me active in my community which has supported me in so many ways for so many years.

What to do if you find a lump- If you feel a lump in your breast, try not to panic or worry. Most lumps are not breast cancer, but something less serious, such as a benign breast condition. Some lumps will go away on their own. In younger women, lumps are often related to menstrual periods and will go away by the end of the cycle. However, if you find a lump (or any change in your breast or underarm area), it’s best to see your health care provider to be sure it's not breast cancer. We are always available at 480-314-7600
