Michael R. Harrington, of Scranton, age 54, departed this world far too soon on January 23, 2026. Michael was the son of Ann Balko Harrington and had an especially close and loving bond with her. In addition to being a devoted father to his three sons, Bryce, Nolan and Gavin, whom he was incredibly proud of; Michael also shared a loving relationship with his nephew Noah. He had many friends and extended family members who were deeply touched by his kindness and humor.

Michael had a true passion for sports and loved not only watching them, but being involved - especially when it came to his boys. He treasured the years spent cheering them on. Michael was a devoted sports fan who proudly supported his teams, the Pittsburg Steelers, the Houston Rockets, the Houston Astros and the Michigan Wolverines. Michael also enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, darts, music, trips to Atlantic City, and - most of all - spending time with friends, sharing good times and laughter.

Michael graduated Scranton Technical High School class of 1990. He worked for many years at Specialty Records and went on to work for the Scranton School District, where he was known as dependable, kind, and always willing to help others. Michael consistently put the needs of others before his own, offering support to friends in need and serving as a shoulder to lean on and an ear to listen. He had a gift for cracking jokes and making people smile, and he created countless lasting memories with those lucky enough to know him.

Michael was preceded in death by his father, Robert W. Harrington. During his final days, Michael was lovingly cared for by his devoted caregiver and companion, as well as by his mother Ann and his three sons, who stood by him and never left his side. Their unwavering love, strength, and devotion carried him through his hardest moments meant more to him than words could ever express. Michael will be missed forever, especially by his mother Ann, whose heart is broken by his loss. His love, laughter, and generous spirit will live on through his sons, family, and friends, and in every memory shared of a man who gave so much of himself to others.

A Celebration of Life to honor Michael will take place at a later date.

Joseph R. Sokoloski, 78, of Peckville, passed peacefully on Sunday at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. Joe recently made the decision to transition to hospice care after a long, hard-fought battle with multiple chronic illnesses, and he was surrounded by his loving family until the end. His wife of more than 55 years is the former Judie Kimble
Born in West Scranton on August 13, 1947, Joe was the son of the late Frank and Francis (Glevick) Sokoloski. He was a 1965 graduate of West Scranton High School where he made many life-long friends. While growing up in Keyser Valley, he was an avid baseball player and became a life-long fan of the Yankees. Joe retired 2 decades ago from Tobyhanna Army Depot as a Systems Analyst, after 37 ½ years with the DOD. Throughout his career, he traveled the world, repairing and programming computers from Europe to the Orient, earning many awards along the way. He was also a rifle marksman with the US Army Reserves, honorably discharged in 1972.
Joe truly loved spending time with his family and many beloved pets. He was a prolific traveler, known to pack up the family for sudden weekend road trips and long vacations, including a 31-day cross-country family adventure. When asked how much longer the ride would be, his answer was always “An hour and a half!”. Some of his best memories with his daughters when they were young were weekly trips to Nay Aug Park to enjoy the rides and nights out for pizza at his favorite, Andy’s. He never missed a dance recital, a junior cheerleading competition, or a grade school play day, and he was always very proud of both of his girls.
He and Judie enjoyed their retirement wintering in Florida, taking over 20 cruises, making the most of their high-roller status on very frequent trips to Atlantic City, taking drives in his Corvette and later spending time with their cherished grandson, Chase.
Joe was very talented DIY guy and was often called on by friends and family for help with every type of home project. He took great pride in creating a unique family party space in his basement and a fun pool area for the summers. He was excited every year to beautifully decorate his home for Christmas, which was a neighborhood favorite. When his girls were young, he dressed as Santa and walked down the sidewalk every Christmas Eve, a memory that even some neighbors were smiling about this week as we remembered Dad.
Joe and his wife were blessed to have built their home and life in a fantastic neighborhood, where everyone remained close life-long friends. He enjoyed supporting the Valley View Cougar football team with the guys, gathering for our annual block party, and heading out for dinner often with the neighbors on Saturday nights. Joe is survived by his wife Judie, their daughters, Brandy Sokoloski and fiancé Kris Sheridan, Peckville Tracy Sklareski and her husband Chris and grandson, Chase Joseph Sklareski, Dickson City. The family would like to thank Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore and the staff of the Green Ridge Health Care Center, especially his favorite nurse Alex
Viewing for family and friends will be on Thursday, 4 to 6:30 pm in the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services LLC, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton. A Blessing Service will be officiated by the Rev. Fr. James Paisley on Friday at 10 am in the funeral home. Shirley Jean Peters, 65 of Taylor, passed on Thursday at Geisinger/CMC. Born in Scranton, she is the daughter of the late Teddy and Janet Ross. She was a high school graduate of the Scranton School District and employed as a nursing caretaker.

Caretaking didn’t stop at work, but continued into her home life. She was an eternal mother figure to anyone who needed to be loved and for that many are left missing a piece of their hearts. Outside her children, her grandchildren were the center of her universe. She joyfully celebrated every big and small win and ensured they all were left knowing Nanny was their biggest fan. Many would say Shirley was stubborn. However, it was because she was determined to always be there for the ones she loved. She was a pet enthusiast and enjoyed countless nights snuggling her fur babies. Those of which already sense the lack of her presence. Her children are eternally grateful for the extra care her grandchildren Noah and Kate provided in her time of need.

She is survived by her husband Frederick Peters, sons; Paul Ross and wife Danielle, Clarks Summit, Teddy Ross and wife Amanda, MO, Ryan Ross and wife Jennifer, Dickson City, daughter, Nicole Parry, Moscow, 2 stepchildren; Alexa and Jake Peters, Taylor, 14 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, brother; Paul Ross, Scranton. She was predeceased by a son; Preston Ross, sisters; Pam Vorozilchak and Donna Engleman.

“Now cracks our noble hearts, Good night sweet princess, And flights of angles sing thee to thy rest.” Adapted from Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
Born November 10, 1942, Patricia recently of Dickson City, was a longtime resident of North Scranton. Her son and daughter-in-law, Walter Charles Bell and Julie (Jones); grandchildren Davida and Bryan Bonczkiewicz and Kailynn Bell and her spouse; and great grandchildren Jayden, McKinlee, Gavin and Murphy were the centers of her universe. She was a constant pillar of support for her adoring parents, Catherine and Walter Bell. She was the tough but nurturing big sister of Walter W. Bell and his wife Becky (Welby) and Julia H. Kirk and her husband Carl, as well as an amazing aunt to their children and grandchildren (her “kiddos”). She also cared deeply for her extended family of brothers and sisters; Butch McHale, Ann McHale, Edith McHale, Charles Bell and James Reese.
She was our touchstone for unconditional love, laughter, and family. We delighted in her cooking and baking, her stories, and sense of humor. Besides spending time with loved ones, she enjoyed her black and white movies, Hallmark stories, and game shows. She will be fondly remembered by her friends and fellow residents at Keystone Place Senior Living. Patricia worked hard her whole life, for most of which, she proudly sewed American-made clothes in local garment factories. She was a faithful member of the former Providence Presbyterian Church.
The family is immensely grateful for the loving care and assistance provided by her daughter-in-law Julie over the years.
Patricia will be greatly missed—but her memory will remain in all our hearts and souls which are indelibly marked by her abundant love, generosity, and bright spirit. Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, November 8 from 1 to 3 pm at Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton. Private interment to be at convenience of the family.
