Jewish Family Service of Northeastern Pennsylvania

Jewish Family Service of Northeastern Pennsylvania Serving the entire community! JFSNEPA provides Mental Health Care, and Older Adult Services. The function that remained to the Federation was that of service.

The Jewish Federation of Scranton was organized in August 1915 and was primarily set up to coordinate the relief activities of all the service organizations in existence in the Jewish community at that time. In 1915, the function of the Federation was one of family service, fund raising and coordinating the activities of the medical and dental clinics. The particular concern of the Jewish Federation was and always has been the family. In the near century of our experience, families have weathered storms and upheavals that have left their mark on governments and established human institutions. For the Jewish families, persecution, torture, forced migrations and hurried adjustments to new ways of living have been some of the handicaps imposed. Within these stressors, the family has been expected to fulfill its function of providing the secure haven in which children may be enabled to mature with strength to carry on their eventual designated activities in the community. Throughout this period, the Federation stood ready to help families in meeting their everyday problems. Until 1935, the Jewish Federation’s emphasis was upon relief and rehabilitation for the needy and unemployed, although the Federation assisted Jewish families with various family problems. In 1945, the Scranton-Lackawanna Jewish Council was formed and assumed responsibility for the “Federation” function of the agency such as raising funds, allocations, community relations and community planning, etc. From 1945 on, with the increased prosperity in the Jewish community and the fact that the State now had a well-developed Public Assistance program, the relief function of the Federation decreased tremendously. In 1949, the Policy Committee of the Federation studied the function of the Federation and, in 1950, suggested that, among other things, a trained social worker be engaged as Executive Director in order to provide a skilled caseworker and counseling services to the Jewish community. The Board of the Federation accepted the recommendation and Albert Geffen, who was a graduate from a school of social work, was engaged. In 1976, the agency name was changed from the Jewish Federation to the name that remains today, The Jewish Family Service of Northeast Pennsylvania.

As part of the annual Great Ignatian Challenge, Scranton Prep students along with the generosity Minora, Krowiak, Munley, and Batyko Attorneys at Law, partnered with ShopRite to purchase a pallet full of kosher food items for the JFS Mae S. Gelb Food Pantry, helping ensure culturally appropriate and nutritious food for families in need this season! 🙌

A huge thank-you to Katie Gallagher, MS, RD, LD (ShopRite Dietitian) for her expertise in choosing quality food and for helping bring this effort to life.

We’re proud of the Prep students and community for living our mission of service and generosity — working together to make a real difference right here at home. 💛

JFS is delighted to once again partner with Home Instead for this year’s Be a Santa to a Senior program!

Thanks to the kindness of our community, dozens of holiday “bulbs” were selected—each one representing a heartfelt wish from a local senior. Generous donors purchased and wrapped these gifts, and Home Instead helped coordinate their journey to JFS.

Our Older Adult and Guardianship Program will be delivering these meaningful presents to seniors throughout our region, bringing warmth, joy, and connection to those who need it most this holiday season.

Together, we’re making the holidays brighter for our older neighbors! 🎁✨

Yesterday, JFS NEPA met with the dedicated team at the Scranton Public Library to explore how we can work together. 💙📚

As more community spaces become safe havens for people seeking connection and stability, libraries are on the front lines. JFS is proud to offer guidance, resources, and mental health expertise to help library staff feel prepared, supported, and empowered.

Together, we’re building a stronger, more compassionate community — one conversation at a time.
Together, we can make a difference.

JFS Social Workers Maggy and Mendy from JFS NEPA were grateful for the opportunity to meet with Missy Bednar and tour Elan Skilled Nursing and Rehab, A Jewish Senior Life Community. We are excited about the potential to collaborate and bring meaningful mental health support to the residents. Strengthening partnerships like this helps us better serve our community and ensure older adults receive the care and compassion they deserve.

We were honored to welcome Danny Brom, Ph.D., to JFS this week for an insightful and meaningful presentation on trauma and its impact on individuals and communities.

Dr. Brom—an internationally recognized expert in trauma treatment and the founding director of Metiv: The Israel Psychotrauma Center - מטיב: המרכז הישראלי לפסיכוטראומה —shared valuable guidance on trauma responses, resilience-building, and the importance of early intervention. His expertise strengthens our ability to support those we serve every day.

This visit was especially meaningful as Dr. Brom is the brother of our own JFS social worker, Marguerite Bushwick, LCSW, NCG. We are grateful to both of them for their dedication to healing and mental health.

Thank you, Dr. Brom, for sharing your time and knowledge with our staff and community partners. At JFS, we remain committed to fostering understanding, resilience, and compassionate care throughout our community.
