Florida’s coastline is referred to as various Coasts. Today we are leaving the Space Coast, passing through the Treasure Coast to our final destination the Gold Coast.

We are 3 stops from our final destination in Fort Lauderdale, so it’s time for some reflection on our trip. Me surviving breast cancer and our realization that life is short, sometimes shorter than you think, is part of what motivated us to attempt America’s Great Loop, twice.
Along the way I shared my breast cancer story when the opportunity presented itself. I met 2 people in particular that impacted me.
One was a guy who was a dock hand in Florida, who was about our age. He shared his wife’s story with us. She was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and she beat it. She was in remission and went in for a check up and the doctors found that her cancer had metastasized and she was told to get her affairs in order. I was shocked to hear that. That is every breast cancer survivor’s worst nightmare and the thing that keeps me up at night.
Months later in Chesapeake City, MD we met a couple who were sitting next to us at a restaurant. They were on their way home from a doctor’s appointment and decided to treat themselves to a waterfront lunch. She found out that her breast cancer was back. She did not yet know the severity of the reoccurrence. Again, I was frightened and again I was reminded of the fear that all breast cancer “survivors” share - reoccurrence and metastasis.
During our trip I hit the 5-year mark and was able to discontinue taking hormone blockers, which were part of my breast cancer treatment. I’m thrilled as I hated the side effects. 2 months later I am slowly beginning to feel like myself again. At the request of my Oncologist, I am continuing with another infusion therapy for a couple of years. Luckily the side effects are minimal.
A couple of days ago I heard on the news that AI is playing a role in diagnosing breast cancer and breast cancer reoccurrence. That gives me hope that I will never have to hear the words metastatic breast cancer from my doctor. The statistics are that 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer. I’m grateful that I survived and spared 7 others from this disease. God bless 💕.

Day 152 - Hilton Head, SC
We took advantage of our down day. We both caught up on work. I did a deep clean of the boat’s interior and Steve did a deep clean of the boat’s exterior. She is looking good. We treated ourselves to lunch at Quarterdeck restaurant in the marina.

Day 151 - Georgetown, SC to Hilton Head, SC.
We woke up at 5am and departed Georgetown at 6:15am. The weather was favorable so we took the outside. Our original destination was Charleston, SC. We had great conditions on the ocean so we canceled our Marina in Charleston and continued on an additional 75 miles to Hilton Head, SC.
We are staying at Harbour Town Yacht Basin at Sea Pines resort. We will be here 3 nights through Work Wednesday and Steve’s birthday!

Day 150 - Southport, NC to Georgetown, SC. It was nice on the outside, so we went for it. Unforcasted 6’ waves out of Southport on a straight course, so Steve ran closer to shore and the swells were much better. We hit a foggy area and the seas laid right down. We were docked in time to grab a late brunch at The George Hotel, which is a new hotel next to the Marina with a great restaurant. After brunch I did 4 loads of laundry, Steve sprayed the boat down. We had a dinner reservation at Root, which was a cool Farm to Table restaurant that we really liked last time we were here. It has really gone down hill. We ordered apps and then got our check and left. We ate back at the hotel and had a wonderful meal.

AGLCA has a network of people who have done the loop and live along the route. They are called Harbor Hosts. They volunteer their time and local knowledge to help loopers when they are in the area. Some Harbor Hosts will drive you to the airport or hospital, etc. While looping you can reach out to them and they will help you. Some Harbor Hosts go above and beyond. The Harbor Hosts in Southport have won the AHLCA Harbor Hosts of the Year award. They are a cute retired couple who live right across from the marina in Southport, NC. After we docked yesterday he came to our boat and invited us to “Porch Time” at their house! Porch Time is famous in the looping community. It’s a BYOB Happy Hour on their front porch with all of the loopers in port. He goes over upcoming ports and things to know along the way. We really enjoyed meeting everyone.

The Great Loop on a Jet Ski? Yep. We saw Amy at Coinjock 2 days ago. She had an AGLCA burgee on the front of her PWC and a US flag on the back. She pulled in behind our boat unbeknownst to us. I looked out the galley window and saw her. I couldn’t believe my eyes. She got off the PWC and sat on the dock for a few minutes and then took off. Crazy!

The fun continues!
We were waiting for the noon opening of the North Landing Bridge and the bridge tender hailed us on the radio. We responded, but she couldn’t hear us! I ran downstairs and got our handheld radio that we use on our tender. We were able to communicate with the bride tender. Again, redundancy came in handy. We were able to turn off the breaker and reset our radio at the helm and it is now working again.
