We are 3 stops from our final destination in Fort Lauderdale, so it’s time for some reflection on our trip. Me surviving breast cancer and our realization that life is short, sometimes shorter than you think, is part of what motivated us to attempt America’s Great Loop, twice.
Along the way I shared my breast cancer story when the opportunity presented itself. I met 2 people in particular that impacted me.
One was a guy who was a dock hand in Florida, who was about our age. He shared his wife’s story with us. She was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and she beat it. She was in remission and went in for a check up and the doctors found that her cancer had metastasized and she was told to get her affairs in order. I was shocked to hear that. That is every breast cancer survivor’s worst nightmare and the thing that keeps me up at night.
Months later in Chesapeake City, MD we met a couple who were sitting next to us at a restaurant. They were on their way home from a doctor’s appointment and decided to treat themselves to a waterfront lunch. She found out that her breast cancer was back. She did not yet know the severity of the reoccurrence. Again, I was frightened and again I was reminded of the fear that all breast cancer “survivors” share - reoccurrence and metastasis.
During our trip I hit the 5-year mark and was able to discontinue taking hormone blockers, which were part of my breast cancer treatment. I’m thrilled as I hated the side effects. 2 months later I am slowly beginning to feel like myself again. At the request of my Oncologist, I am continuing with another infusion therapy for a couple of years. Luckily the side effects are minimal.
A couple of days ago I heard on the news that AI is playing a role in diagnosing breast cancer and breast cancer reoccurrence. That gives me hope that I will never have to hear the words metastatic breast cancer from my doctor. The statistics are that 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer. I’m grateful that I survived and spared 7 others from this disease. God bless 💕.
