Q: Do I really need supplements if I eat healthy?

A: Sometimes, yes. Even a balanced diet can be deficient in certain nutrients. For example, vitamin D is tough to get from food alone. You may need a vitamin D supplement if you spend most of your time indoors or live in an area with limited sunlight.

It’s worth keeping in mind that supplements are meant to fill nutrient gaps—not replace real food. Our pharmacists can help you figure out what’s worth your money and what’s just hype.

Generic Medicine Vs. Brand-Name Medicine: Which Is Better?

Here’s the truth: generic drugs work just as well as brand-name drugs. They have the same active ingredients, dosage, and effectiveness, and they’re held to the same safety and quality standards by the FDA.

The difference? The colors, flavorings, and cost. Generic drugs cost less than brand-name drugs primarily because the most expensive phase of bringing a drug to market (research, development, and marketing) has already been done by the brand-name manufacturer. Generic drug manufacturers don’t have to repeat this process. Once the patent expires, they only have to prove bioequivalence, which means their drug works the same way in the body as the brand-name version.

If you’re wondering whether there’s a generic version of your brand-name medicine, you can find out by:
- Asking one of our pharmacists.
- Using Drugs@FDA, an online database containing information about FDA-approved prescription and generic medicines.
- Using the online version of the FDA’s Orange Book, which identifies the drug products the agency has approved on the basis of safety and effectiveness.
