Most adults will get some form of arthritis within their lifetime. Sometimes it is there but there is no pain! In those better cases it’s only a finding on an X-ray. 😉 Focus on good shoes and adequate arch support and maybe that arthritis will never bother you! 🙌🏼

For others, the joint space narrowing and bone spurs from arthritis cause a lot of pain and difficulty walking. In those cases, if shoes and arch supports don’t help, pain relief can be achieved with anti inflammatory medication. Once arthritis forms in the feet it is impossible to stop it from getting worse, BUT we can slow down the progression with stable shoes and custom or over-the-counter orthotics.

If you have new pain and swelling on the top of one foot you may have a stress fracture! Stress fractures most often occurs in the long metatarsal bones of the foot and are often a result of repetitive stress from overuse.

Some people are more prone to stress fractures than others. People with history of low bone density such as osteopenia or osteoporosis are much more susceptible. Stress fractures can occur from something as simple as walking a lot in an ill-supportive shoe!

It is important to catch the diagnosis early to prevent delayed union or non union of the fractures bone. If you think you might have a stress fracture, call your podiatrist for an appointment ASAP! 💨

Have you ever wondered what arthritis actually looked like? 🤔

This patient had a procedure called a “Cheilectomy” to remove bone spurs causing pain and limiting the motion of her big toe joint. In surgery we estimated about a 30% loss of cartilage on the head of her first metatarsal (not the worst case thankfully). Unfortunately once you lose this native cartilage it never comes back!

When arthritis forms, you don’t only lose the cartilage that allows smooth motion of your joint, it also results in loss of joint space and bone spurs. The end result? … Pain and stiffness!

Thankfully there are many things people can do to help protect their feet from arthritis. If despite your efforts arthritis develops anyway, thankfully there are plenty of conservative treatments that can help before surgery is an option! 👣

What happens to your feet when you have diabetes?

Why Does Diabetes Damage Blood Vessels? Diabetes can reduce levels of a vasodilator called nitric oxide within blood vessels. Nitric oxide is a gas essential for keeping vessels dilated so that blood flows freely throughout the body. Consistently high blood glucose causes narrowing of vessels, which may restrict blood flow to the legs and feet.
