This week, Seal Beach Marine Safety hosted a beach driving training for Orange County lifeguard agencies. Lifeguards came together to sharpen their skills in handling sand terrain, emergency response maneuvers, and learning safe and effective beach driving techniques.

Driving safely on the sand is critical—not only for the lifeguards but also for the public. Proper vehicle control on uneven surfaces and maneuvering through soft sand are key to ensuring lifeguards can respond effectively to emergencies while minimizing the risk of accidents.

What made this training even more impactful was the collaboration between agencies. Working side-by-side in a hands-on environment helped everyone sharpen their skills while improving communication and teamwork. Sharing knowledge, techniques, and best practices across departments increases safety and awareness on all of Orange County’s beaches. This collaboration also strengthens relationships between agencies, ensuring that when emergencies arise, everyone can respond and coordinate effectively.

Together, we continue to prioritize safety, enhance response capabilities, and maintain a safe environment for all beachgoers.

Seal Beach Marine Safety Awards Recap!

This past week, we celebrated an exciting milestone in our Marine Safety family! Please join us in congratulating Matthew Corb, who was officially pinned as our newest Marine Safety Officer!

Matt has been an integral part of the Seal Beach Marine Safety Department since 2011, serving in various roles throughout his career. Most recently, he has been the coordinator of the Seal Beach Junior Lifeguard Program since 2018.

With a Bachelor’s degree in history from UC Santa Barbara and a Master’s degree in Political Science from CSU Long Beach, Matt brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to his new position. When he’s not at work, you’ll find Matt surfing, camping, and enjoying the great outdoors. Matt is excited and honored to continue serving our Seal Beach community in this new role.

We also had the honor of presenting the Raising the Bar of Lifeguard Excellence award to five of our lifeguards. This distinguished recognition is given to individuals who demonstrate the highest standards of skill, professionalism, and courage in lifeguarding.

Please join us in congratulating Chris Dominguez, Dean Frizzell, Brett Peoples, Ellie Sherlock, and Beau Wade, who received this special commendation for their heroic actions on December 22, 2024, during technical rescues in 10+ foot surf. Without the lifeguards’ swift intervention, a drowning would have occurred. Their quick thinking and bravery in critical, life-threatening situations exemplify the very best of our Marine Safety team.

These awards reflect the courage, skill, and professionalism that make Seal Beach Marine Safety Department great. We are so proud of our team!
