In an effort to help the residents and resident families learn about the different facilities in Carteret and the adjacent Counties, Snug Harbor will host several Resource Events. Representatives from Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living Facilities in our area will be in Randall Hall at Snug Harbor Thursday 10/24/19 from (10:30am - 12:00pm) and (6:00pm - 7:30pm) and again Saturday 10/26/19 from (10:30am - 12:00pm) to hand out information and answer questions about their facilities. All Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay residents and family members are welcome to join us during these times to help plan for a smooth transition to another facility.

It is with deep regret that the owners and management of Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay announce that the facility will be closing. It has been a pleasure serving the Down East communities for forty three years which made the decision to close a very difficult one. Significant damage to the facility by Hurricane Florence in 2018 and again by Hurricane Dorian in 2019 resulted in a huge financial strain on the facility. The delay in insurance reimbursement for damage repair also made it impossible for the facility to comply with the State of North Carolina’s Division of Health & Human Service, Life Safety Division regulations for operating a skilled health care facility. In addition, the overall costs to operate the facility, to employ and retain qualified staff, along with the current change to the healthcare reimbursement made the facility financially unsustainable. This was a difficult decision by both the ownership and management and closing was the only option.

Resource meetings are being planned to help inform residents and family members of their options for placement at other facilities in our area. We will also have resources available to help Snug Harbor staff find future employment. Announcements about these resources will be announced on the Snug Harbor page.

We want to say thank you for your support of Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay. It has been a great honor to serve the needs of the Down East Community and Carteret County for so many years!

Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay was originally built for the mariners. Even though our retirement community is now open to the public, we have the utmost respect for those who earn a living on the water. Here are some photos from the NC Seafood Festival 21st Annual Blessing of the Fleet from this past Sunday. This event takes place every Fall to give thanks for the abundant natural resources God provides, to remember those fishermen who have gone before and to bless the ships and crews that make their living at Sea. Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay was honored to be a part of the 2019 Carteret Health Care Joint & Spine Reunion Walk this morning. It was great seeing all the joint replacement and spine surgery patients who benefited from Snug Harbor's short-term rehabilitation program for their recovery. Congratulations to the teams of Drew Norris, PA & Sarah Bedard, PA-C, MPAS and Dr. Jeffrey Moore and Dr. David Kirby for the tie in the TED Hose Challenge. It was a great reunion with great food and fun times. West Carteret High School

Hurricane Dorian Update 9/6/19 12:20pm

Just an update to let everyone know all Snug Harbor residents were checked on throughout the night and all are safe. Most residents actually slept through the storm last night. Snug Harbor did lose power, but the backup generator kicked in and the building is functional. The residents enjoyed a hot breakfast this morning and are finishing a hot lunch now. The cleanup process has begun and we hope to be back to normal soon.

Hurricane Dorian Update 9/5/19

As we make final preparations for Hurricane Dorian, we would like resident families to know that we currently have more staff than residents in the building. During the Hurricane, we will be focused on keeping Snug Harbor residents safe and comfortable. We will post additional updates once the storm has passed. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff members who unselfishly put their personal lives and concerns on hold to be here for Snug Harbor residents.
