And one day out of nowhere, it finally clicks: that you can’t live hoping to please everyone and you can’t live putting your happiness in their hands. That you’ll be okay without their validation and that if everyone everywhere likes you all the time, it probably means you aren’t being authentic and that’s on you—not them.
That there’s no freedom to be found in people-pleasing and that there’s a distinct line between being kind and being someone’s doormat. That sometimes you have to walk away. That sometimes you have to say no. That sometimes the boat has to be rocked, because otherwise you’re just drowning waiting for their approval.
That this whole time you thought you were making peace, you were really keeping the peace for people who don’t appreciate, or even know the real you. That the stress of juggling all those balls wasn’t worth it in the end. That it’s really not about choosing yourself or choosing them so much as it is about being honest and walking down the path you know was made for you, whether they understand your footsteps or not.
That there’s always critic with loud complaints but not every critic counts. That it’s not wrong to trust your gut and that you aren’t responsible for carrying everyone else’s feelings, and so one by one you set the bags down, open your arms and fully embrace the journey.
And what a beautiful thing that is when that special click happens.
Love,
Amy
