Holiday Overwhelm Series 2 of 3! ⬇️

We know that going back to school/ work after the holidays can be overwhelming and challenging. 😵‍💫
This guide is designed to focus on regulation, predictability and practicality after the holidays!

🗣️Let us suggest a few helpful tips (Occupational Therapy Style):
1. REBUILD predictable routines with visual and sensory supports. (This reduces anxiety and supports executive functioning!)
2. RESET the environment to reduce visual and sensory overload. (A calmer space leads to calmer behavior!)
3. BE INTENTIONAL with toys, materials, and sensory input. (Regulation supports attention, play and learning... some of our favorite things!)
4. SUPPORT transitions with extra time and co-regulation. (Dysregulation during transitions is a signal for support, not discipline!)
5. FOCUS on regulation and capacity before independence. (Regulation comes BEFORE independence... that's our OT mantra!)

Check out the graphics below for seemingly small, but actually really big, mindset shifts to help your child grow and thrive! 💙

Our passion here at PTA is to support you supporting your family.🤝

Holiday Overwhelm Series 1 of 3! ⬇️

We know that going back to school/ work after the holidays can be overwhelming and challenging. If you're like many of us, your home is covered in what we're calling "overwhelm..." You know, toys and books and things all over the place... scattered around and being played with for a second and then left in the floor in various places... 😵‍💫

🗣️Let us suggest a few helpful tips (Speech Therapy Style):
1. Rotate toys every 2-3 weeks. (This helps parents be organized and intentional while increasing kids' attention, engagement and vocabulary!)
2. Consider organizing your toy rotation by play skill (i.e. pretend toys, cause/effect, problem solving!)
3. Keep only 5-8 toys out in the main area at a time. (Fewer toys is more opportunity to work on key word repetition which allows for more learning!)
4. Consider low tech toys as an alternative to loud and bright screens and noisy stimulation. (This allows for strong motor skill devlopment while increasing language opportunities!)

Check out the graphics below for examples of how to intentionally play with your children while helping them grow and thrive! Our passion here at PTA is to support you supporting your family. 🤝

Petey the Elf decided to work on some very important speech skills today — pretend play and snack selection 😉
He was spotted whipping up French fries in the speech therapy kitchen and taste-testing every last one (quality control is key!).

We love turning playtime into progress — even when elves are involved!

We found Petey swinging through the OT gym, practicing balance, core strength, and a little sensory regulation before a busy day of therapy.

Looks like even elves know how important it is to get their movement in! Keep an eye out—Petey may be trying a new obstacle course next 👀

After working hard in speech today, Petey the Elf finally got to pick out his favorite sucker — and you can bet he chose the brightest one in the bowl!

He’s been cheering on our kiddos, practicing his sounds, and showing off his best articulation skills all morning. Hard work deserves a sweet reward, right?

We’re so proud of all the effort our speech kids put in every day… and Petey is too!

Petey the Elf is working on his reflexes this morning… by catching snowflakes in the lobby!

Our PT team says he’s really improving his hand-eye coordination—and having a blast while he’s at it!

If you’re visiting Pediatric Therapy Associates today, see if you can spot him practicing his “snowflake skills.” He’s always finding playful ways to join in on the fun!
