🌸 FAQ: What to Expect During a Mammogram 🌸
Are you scheduled for a mammogram? Whether it’s your first or just a refresher, we’ve got answers to your top questions!
📷 What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast used to detect changes or abnormalities, like lumps or early signs of breast cancer.
⏱ How long does a mammogram take?
The procedure itself takes about 10-20 minutes. Your appointment may be slightly longer for preparation and paperwork.
👗 What should I wear?
Wear a two-piece outfit so you can easily remove your top. Avoid deodorant, lotion, or powder on your chest and underarms, as these can affect the results.
🤔 Does it hurt?
You might feel some pressure as your breast is compressed between two plates to get a clear image, but it’s quick and tolerable. If you’re concerned, let the technologist know—they can adjust for your comfort.
📅 When should I schedule my mammogram?
If you’re premenopausal, try to schedule it about a week after your period, when your breasts are less sensitive.
🔞 Who needs a mammogram?
Guidelines vary, but most women are advised to start regular mammograms at age 40-50 and continue yearly or every two years. If you have a family history of breast cancer, consult your doctor about earlier screenings.
💊 What if I have breast implants?
You can still get a mammogram! Just let your technologist know so they can use special techniques to capture clear images.
📝 How soon will I get results?
Results are often available within a few days. Your doctor will contact you with the findings and discuss any next steps if needed.
