The Telehealth and Technology TIN is sponsoring a presentation on "The AI Your Clients Are Already Using: Clinical and Ethical Considerations" by Dr. Jay Burke and Dr. Sofia Georgiadou
January 23, 2026 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (PT)
1 CE (free for Telehealth and Technology TIN members)
Register here.
Clients are already using AI tools like ChatGPT, Woebot, Wysa, and Character. AI for mental health support (Rousmaniere et al., 2025), often without discussing this with their therapists. While research shows promising outcomes including symptom reduction (Mehta et al., 2021), concerning safety gaps remain, including inappropriate responses to suicidal ideation and inconsistent crisis handling (Moore et al., 2025; Santos et al., 2025).
This session presents a practical ethical framework for engaging clients in explicit conversations about their AI use. We will address four critical areas: crisis safety and privacy concerns, emotional attachment and relationship formation with AI companions, AI hallucinations and misinformation, and patterns of overuse or dependence. Participants will gain evidence-based strategies to identify common AI mental health tools, understand client motivations for AI adoption, and respond with clinically sound approaches that support informed decision-making while maintaining therapeutic safety and alliance.

Meet our newest faculty member, Tamura Turney:

Special interests : I am passionate about working with couples and young adults; I enjoy supporting clients working through issues related to spirituality, sexuality, identity and trauma. I have an eclectic therapeutic style that is largely informed by narrative and solution-focused therapies. Personally, I love cooking, gardening, cycling, attending concerts, and spending time with my family and friends.

Systemic Therapy for a Just and Humane World

The Master of Arts in Couples & Family Therapy (MACFT) program focuses on systemic and relational therapy. The program prepares effective couples and family therapists who integrate faith or spirituality at the clients’ request. Under the guidance of state approved and American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) approved supervisors who are licensed clinicians, students are trained to assess, diagnose, consult, and treat relationships and individuals. Students learn about clients’ diverse backgrounds and faith traditions; they engage in self-of-the-therapist exploration and spiritual formation in order to better understand themselves as holistic beings. Graduates are prepared to clinically heal and empower diverse relationships and individuals across faith traditions and cultural locations.
