In 2014, native activists and allies successfully advocated for the City of Seattle to recognize and celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day, on the second Monday in October. This year it falls on October 11, 2021. There are many ways to help celebrate in Seattle.
Tune in October 12-15, 2021, for the virtual presentation. This year’s theme, "Where the world gathers" links together the series of 24 free festivals presented throughout the year, each with a unique cultural focus, identity, and a range of engaging activities.

Thursday September 30th is Orange Shirt Day, a day to acknowledge the history Residential Schools and its impact on Indigenous populations. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. This is a day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter. September 30th was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It is an opportunity for all Nations, local governments, schools, and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

There is an upcoming talk by Urban Indian Health Institute that may be of interest. The talk, “Sharing Our Knowledge: Indigenous Perspectives on Clinical Trials,” is the 3rd in a series of town halls that will be held on Friday, August 20th, at 1:00 PM.

This talk will be focused on COVID-19 clinical trials. The event description is as follows: “We will talk about how the process of finding and testing medicine for safety is not just a western tool or concept but has been done by indigenous people continuously throughout our history. We invite you to join us for our third town hall where we will reflect on how our people have found the traditional medicine we continue to use in the present through our own clinical trial processes and its parallels to the western medicine we see today.” (Videos of the other 2 town halls can be found here: https://www.uihi.org/projects/covid-19-treatment/)

"Keep it Sacred"

Two traditional forms of to***co creating puffs of smoke. The smoke depicts a communal gathering around a drum circle, and the sparks fade out to look like stars, with the forms of animals and ancestors in the constellations looking down at the gathering. We emphasized that to***co should be used respectfully and safely in its traditional forms, and that by choosing not to put harmful chemicals in our bodies by cigarette or other unhealthy to***co usage, we are honoring these traditions and keeping it sacred.

“Pathways”

Our design shows the red road splitting off into two paths: one of tradition and healthy to***co use, and one of unhealthy recreational to***co use. On the traditional path, there is a peace pipe, and the surrounding area is green and full of life. On the bad path, there is a carton of ci******es and everything is dried up and dead. In the center, there is a to***co plant.
