This Earth Day, I went to the park to meet a friend, felt the ground under my feet and the sun on my face. I looked around and admired the resplendent beauty so abundant in our state: The stillness and soft rippling of the lake, the curly tailfeathers of a Mallard duck, the sweet little daisies popping up in the ground cover, the fluffy pink cherry blossoms in brilliant contrast against the clear blue sky.
In my yard, I pulled up last year's forgotten kale that had gone to flower. I harvested the remaining leaves and admired the plant's persistence and drive to exist. I noted the fig tree's bright green buds and felt excitement about their promise to bear eventual fruit.
I'm reminded that things take time and patience, and that what we nurture has a greater chance of thriving. But also, if we forget to take care of something, there might just be enough in the reserves to get by until we get back around to it.
I think this is how it is with humans, too.
As the cycle of growth emerges anew in us, can we improve our water and nutrient intake? How can we manage pests and encourage bigger blooms? How can we take in enough light?
Here's to the Earth for demonstrating resilience, strength, and flourishing despite environmental struggles. Here's to sustaining each other with care and honoring our inextricable connection to the planet and each other.
Happy Earth Day!
