Rob left an indelible mark on the Department of Pediatrics, with his leadership in the Division of Dermatology for 25 years and being such a relied-upon colleague and mentor, touching the lives of leaders, students and patients alike. Rob’s sudden passing leaves a void in our hearts and in the field, and he will be dearly missed.

In June, the Center for Indigenous Health held an open house to celebrate their new space, which will enable them to welcome more students and provide a home base for building community. Senator Claudia Kauffman, who spoke at the event, praised the Center’s work to help young Native people see themselves reflected in medicine, and to build care “rooted in trust, respect, and a deep understanding of our values.” Read more about the event and the Center's work: http://bit.ly/4kEvFDl

"The health of America's kids is not as good as it should be, not as good as the other countries," Dr. Fred Rivara spoke with the Associated Press about a recent study showing that children's health has deteriorated in the U.S. He coauthored an editorial accompanying the study, published in JAMA.

A new study shows that the health of U.S. children has deteriorated over the past 17 years, with kids today more likely to experience obesity, chronic diseases and other problems.

Efforts in WA to promote secure firearm storage appear to be working, according to new research from UW Pediatrics Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program and colleagues at Public Health - Seattle & King County. Between 2013 and 2022, the percentage of Washington adults who reported storing fi****ms securely rose from 34.9% to 48.8%. The study was published in JAMA Network Open.

“Secure storage is a core part of being a responsible firearm owner,” said lead author Kelsey Conrick, PhD, MPH. “It keeps fi****ms out of the hands of children, prevents guns from being stolen, and potentially can put time and space between someone who is in crisis and a weapon they could use to harm themselves or someone else.”

The percentage of adults in Washington state who reported that fi****ms in their households were stored unloaded and locked rose from 34.9% to 48.8% between 2013 and 2022, a University of Washington School of Medicine study has found.

“The number one thing I tell families is to know your air quality." Early in her career as a pediatrician, Dr. Mary Crocker found that she was seeing patients with exacerbated asthma symptoms due to wildfire smoke. In response, she developed evidence-based interventions to help reduce symptoms during wildfire events and help providers guide families of children with asthma.

NIEHS program helped Mary Crocker, M.D., develop evidence-based interventions to reduce children’s asthma symptoms during wildfires.
