Many people believe passing on wealth or making the next generations life better or easier is about money. And this can be true.

There is another form of emotional wealth that gives children a drastic leg up in society: parents who can self regulate.

Parents who model how to handle difficult emotions (resilience) and who can set their emotions aside to help their children process life in a non-judgmental space.

This is one of the greatest gift any child will ever receive.

Almost all damaging, destructive, addictive and abusive behavior has one core element: impulsivity. Impulsivity is the natural response when we cannot emotionally regulate regulate. It’s survival mode.

There is an incredible body of research that shows how being raised by parents who can emotionally regulate leads to: high levels of resilience, low levels of impulsivity, a lesser risk for addictive behavior, the ability to problem solve, and it sets the foundation for forming healthy relationships as an adult.

Love and appreciation to those who are being curious with their emotions. Who are learning to manage triggers. Who are practicing new ways of responding.

You’re changing society, the world, and gifting future generations with a gift that society had yet to fully acknowledge

Code words or phrases are great for social interactions and especially during the holidays. Code words help us feel safe, in control and can help to build trust in our relationships. Do you use a code word or phrase? Let me know!

Your yearly reminder that boundaries are necessary to keep everyone safe. Your instincts are good, you and your kids deserve all the good things that happen this holiday season.

I've had countless consultations with parents who see grooming signs, or deal with outright toxic grandparents or relatives that don't support their consent practices.

This can be so hard to navigate and my heart goes out to those who are constantly challenged and getting pushback from those who should be supporting this important abuse prevention work.

But here's what you should know:

• You have a right to your boundaries

• Your child has the right to their body boundaries

• Your intuition should not be ignored

• If you see grooming signs, you have a right to remove 1:1 access, even without any proof of abuse

• If you suspect a partner/family member of grooming or abuse, start documenting what you see and/or your child is saying about them

• Get support- be it another family member, your partner, co-parent or friend- boundary setting and upholding doesn't have to be just your work

• Stand your ground. Upholding your boundaries is important for teaching your child how to uphold theirs

• Cutting ties with toxic relatives does not mean you are betraying anyone, it means you are prioritizing the health and safety of your child

• If someone is acting like an unsafe person, they ARE an unsafe person- titles don't matter here

If you're struggling with this and need a plan of action, let's connect.

I also recommend CONSENTletters™ (learn more about them in my resources- via stories) to get the dialogue started about your family boundaries and abuse prevention and consent practices.

Do you deal with toxic family members? And if yes, how are you dealing with it during the holidays?

This past year as I wrote all I could think about was how many “good girls” are going to pick up that workbook and become free

It all starts with the assumption that your kids are inherently "good inside," says the psychologist and hit podcast host, known to her fans as "Dr. Becky."

I see the work you’re doing to undo generational trauma. The painstaking boundaries you’ve had to set and the disheartening sadness you experience in not being able to trust your own family. I see you, I know the resilience and courage you have in breaking those cycles and I’m so proud of how far you’ve come.

Hoping that today, if you can’t celebrate your mom, you can celebrate yourself and the powerful work you do 365 times each year!
